I agree.I'm sorry that I don't have better scans. In person you can tell the difference between black and brown, but it's harder on a computer.

Those are some seriously amazing cards guys. Thank you for posting.

Here are some of the Lenox backs I have owned over the years:

http://t206society.com/product-category/lenox/

Only the McGraw remains in my collection, however I am very happy to have recently acquired a quality Brown Lenox (my first ever Brown) in the recent Robert Edward Auctions. I do not have scans as of yet but will post them soon.

Great stuff guys. Thank you very much for sharing. I hope this turns into a loooooong thread

Default Lenox

This is my favorite one since it is the 1st LENOX which I acquired in 1987. Paid only $15 for it at the HOF weekend Show in Cooperstown.

Will post a few more LENOX cards in subsequent posts.

Hey Adam, when did you get that Schlei /Brown graded? I know that now PSA lists them as black or brown. I got Merkle graded in 2009, long before PSA specified colors.

If my memory serves I am guessing about the same time as yours in 2009.

Default Lenox

Early in 1911, American Lithographic (ALC) started producing their new gold-bordered series of cards with their very colorful and ornate Military Men (T80) cards
being one of their first. Shown here are the Tobacco brands** associated with these cards. Simultaneously, ALC was printing LENOX and UZIT T206's.

Gleaned from an ALC ledger record (dated Feb 1911) is information indicating that ALC was notifying Factory #30 (NYC) that they should insert a T80 card with
a T206 card in LENOX cigarette packs at the Factory......so, each cigarette pack contained a T80 and a T206.

Spring of 1911, T206 production had come to an end. I'm pretty sure that this timeline explains why T206 cards with LENOX and UZIT backs were short-printed.

.

** Note....The T80 cards were also printed with OLD MILL backs. These OLD MILL T80 cards are extremely rare.

It is still hard for me to tell the brown Lenox from the regular ones. Then again my visual recognition isn't the best with those colors. Thanks to those who have shown the Lenox in this thread...

This is one which was recently added to the collection. My first (and likely only) Brown Lenox.

When I laid this card out alongside others for comparison the variation in color was very apparent. The Brown Lenox mirrors a Broad Leaf in color, while the Black Lenox I used matches the color of a Carolina Brights back. I am not sure if this holds up every time, but in this instance the difference appears to be quite distinct.

Derek, which one is brown? It doesn't show on my iPad, and both flips say "black." I'm just curious, I know most people say it really shows in person.

Good morning Ed.

The Joe Lake "St. Louis, no ball" would be an example of a Brown Lenox. This is the first I have ever seen in person and the first thing I noticed was that a Brown Lenox matches a Broad Leaf in color and that a Black Lenox matches a Carolina Brights in color. It is quite distinct in person, and should you come to Southern California in the future I would love to share it with you.

The Schlei portraits in this thread appear to be very distinct as well with a blatant Brown VS Black.

My apologies, but which "flips" are you referring to in your question? I do not think I actually answered your question

Respectfully,

Derek
