Default 1930 Cubs

Posted By: JT Burtchaell

Hey,
Can anyone post side by side pictures of an example from the 1930 Cubs Blue Ribbon Malt set and an example from the 1930 Cubs Team Issue set? Trying to figure out what I have.

Thanks,
JT

Edited to add: Scanner wasn't working earlier. Card is 5x7. It also looks like it was mounted to a backing. Gray residue at the top in strip.

Blue Ribbons are all different sizes. All are 3.5" tall, by 1.4 to 3" wide. Thin high quality glossy stock, blank back, very thin facsimile signature.

Here is one I just picked up.

The Blue Ribbon Malt cards are far different than any of the Cubs team issue cards.
The rare team issue (1932) has whited out backgrounds.
The picture pack ones are much larger.

I don't know of a 1930 Chicago Cubs Team issue but if you're referring to the 1931 Team Set, there are several main differences:

Size. The 1931 Team Cards are larger (6-1/8" x 9-1/2" vs. 5" x 7")

The Mount. The 1931 Team issue comes on a thin, sepia-toned paper stock whereas the 1930 Blue Ribbon Malt cards are often mounted on a gray cardboard backing very similar to the Hockey beehive issues (i.e., they are affixed with a small strip of glue near the top of the card).

Finally, I'm pretty sure, but not positive, that all of the player poses are different between the two sets. I no longer have any of the Blue Ribbon Malt cards after having sold them all to Larry Fritsch some years ago but I do have images of some of the key cards from the 1931 Team issue:

Kiki Cuyler
Gabby Hartnett
Rogers Hornsby
Ray Schalk
Hack Wilson

Forgot to say, there are 3 Blue Ribbon sets, a small handcut card (1930) like I pictured above, a large cabinet card (photo area is 5"X7")(1931), and a large premium 4.9" X 6.9" (1931) that says "Compliments of Blue Ribbon" on bottom.

The only Cubs Picture pack cards that might look similar are larger at 9.5" tall (1930), or 8.9" (1936)

Thanks for the help so far. Shealy only played for the 1930 Cubs and the Beckett checklists only list him in those two sets (1930 Blue Ribbon and 1930 Team Issue). Of course, it could be something else.

Thanks! Just curious, did they have facsimile autographs? Or is this one actually signed?

Does youe Shealy Premium have the gray mount? It looks like it does.

Dont think it makes much difference, but the SCD lists the set as 1931 for some reason ($225 NRMT).

Nice Find.

No, it's been removed from the mount. You can see the residue from the mount just as described by MW
