Default What 1930s team wore this strange uniform?

Posted By: Paul

Here is a link to a scan of a 1934 Butterfinger of Earl Whitehill.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1584752464

Look at the strange uniform he's wearing. There is a large animal mascot logo on the middle of his back. What team wore this kind of uniform? By 1934, Whitehill had played for the Senators and Tigers. The logo sure doesn't look like a Tiger (and definitely not a Senator). It looks more like a fox or a bear. Any thoughts?

Paul

Earl Whitehill was an All-Star in 1933. I know that the National League has special uniforms made, but unfortunately, Washington was an American league team that year.

Maybe it's some kind of practice/warmup/spring-training jersey or perhaps Whitehill was a member of some barnstorming team.

The Tigers wore a tiger head on the back of their road uniforms in 1928, that looks alot like what Mr. Whitehill is donning in the scan. I believe the Braves are the only other team to try this look, in 1930, with a headdress indian.
regards............Todd

Thanks for all of your input. Since Whitehill played with the '28 Tigers and didn't play for the Cubs, I'm betting he's wearing a Tiger on his back. That sure doesn't look like a Tiger to me, but maybe my image of tigers was too influenced by Frosted Flakes boxes as a kid.

I'm technically challenged, so am holding my breath the scan is worth a damn. The illustration comes from Marc Okkonen's great book "Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century", copyright 1991 (Sterling Publishing).

It depicts the same tiger logo on the front of the '27 Tigers uni, and the author goes on to state that the "colorful Tiger's head from the year before (1927)was dramatically displayed in the middle of the back".
