The card appears to be only a strong VG to VG-EX.

Although it may very well be that the bidder really IS interested in both the 2002 Albert Pujols and the 1912 Cobb.

I buy and sell alot of T202s and Leon is right in noting that this price is way out of hand for this condition (even for a Cobb). I wish I did this well when I sold them! However, there are two things here that MAY be the cause of this particular anomoly:

1. A high reserve (say $1200); and
2. an unsophisitcated bidder (with 0 feedback).

Thus it may be that the high bidders' high bid is $1200.

As a general rule though, T202 Cobbs significantly outperform the price guides regardless of condition -- especially the ones with the famous Conlan photo in the center panel. Also, as with many vintage cards, a particular T202 may not appear by itself very often on Ebay (or anywhere else in the open market).

is it just coincidence that the bidder, cardsgoudey, only is bidding on four auctions by the same seller, laserman607.....i think not!

Definitely a SHILL. WHy? Look at the actual bids:

taj55(40) $1,225.00 Nov-20-02 15:03:07 PST
cardsgoudey(0) $1,200.00 Nov-20-02 12:11:47 PST
cardsgoudey(0) $1,199.99 Nov-20-02 12:08:26 PST
unlv-ed(70) $467.00 Nov-20-02 12:07:19 PST

First, our SHILL with (0) Feedback bids ONE PENNY below the so-called "hidden reserve".

And then, three minutes later, he decides "OOOOPS. I better increase my bid by ONE PENNY to be equal to the reserve. Coincidence? <LMAO>

No, I don't think so...

Does eBay give a crap? No, I don't think so, because they get their little percentage...

In fact, I've found that there is nearly a linear relationship between trust and eBay feedback. And on rare occasions like this, that same relationship would best be described as exponential. The fact that he calls someone else a "smart ass" is really quite irrelevant to his fine eBay standing and delightful business disposition.

Dan
I hardly ever sell on EBay and I've never really figured out all this shill bidding stuff. If the reserve is met, doesn't the seller have to pay EBay a %of the realized price? If so, why not bid one penny below the reserve if you're a shill, so that if someone tops you you've got a deal; if not, reserve not met and no fee.
Just wondering............Todd

The next bid will be above the reserve and thus, the seller has a sale at AT LEAST the reserve price.

If the sale didn't happen, he'd still have to pay the listing fee.

The Shill, fake bidder, comes in with no plan to buy (it's the seller's alter ego) to run the price up to the reserve, to make people think it's legit, so they will hopefully bid more and more.

...I did file a Safe Harbor investigation report with eBay, I can't wait to see what they say:

This is just ridiculous. I have seen many professional collectors discussing and watching this auction and commenting on the manner in which it was conducted. The seller either has an alter ego in "cardsgoudey" or had a friend somewhere set this account up to shill bid his auction. Was everyone on eBay supposed to believe that "cardsgoudey" somehow looked into a crystal ball, knew EXACTLY to bid one penny below $1200, then bid that $1200 amount THREE MINUTES LATER as if that ONE PENNY would make a difference in his winning or losing the auction?? It is unbelievable, the garbage some people pull on eBay just to screw people out of money...

I believe very strongly that this must be investigated.

...to the message I sent him (it was very close to what I said to Safe Harbor).

FROM: laserman607

cardsgoudey asked me what the reserve price was, and I
told him. so yes he was trying to bid past the reserve
price to win the auction. But he got outbid. I didn't
screw anyone out of their money. somebody bid past his
bid. Do u have anything better to do with your time?

And then, my reply:

Uh huh. I do. I went to Safe Harbor and used my time there. I'd say that was a little bit better. Since trying to elicit some integrity from dishonest people is usually a waste of time...as you have shown here.

If what you said is true (and it's not), why would he have EVER bid one penny less than the reserve?

"He" <LMAO> realized that was definitely a SHILL BID unless "he" bid the reserve exactly. Which "he" did three minutes later. Thanks for proving my point. How ridiculous.

Ya know, oh whatever...nothing else needs to be said.

...look at this crap:

Current and recent auctions bid on by cardsgoudey(0)
Includes all items that the user has bid on or purchased within the last 30 days. For auction items, bold price means at least one bid has been received.

In some cases, cardsgoudey(0) may no longer be the high bidder.

...cardsgoudey AMAZINGLY was created on the 17th, and he bids ONLY on LASERMAN'S auctions.

Wow.

And the one the goudeyman DOESN'T win is the one that LASERMAN made bank on: the $1200 reserve auction.

I hope taj55, who won that auction, realizes he was shilled up to winning that auction, and I hope he nails Mr. Laserman for it.
