Default t206 old mill ad

Posted By: robert a

This ad shows 3 or 4 cards coming out of the cig. pack.

Not sure if that was to spice the ad up a bit or if some packs contained 3 cards. I know I've heard collectors say that some definitely contained more than one.

Does anyone have any proof for how many cards were contained in other tobacco brands for t206 or other issues?

Any other t206 newspaper ads to show?

thanks.
robert

actually there are 2 cards and a coupon coming out of the pack, which may have been an ad scheme, however the text states baseball pictures PLURAL in each pack, in the print, so perhaps there were 2 cards in old mill packs, but perhaps not others, i don't know the answer but someone has to have witnessed at least a couple of old pack openings in the old days when the value was not considered that high.

I've seen a few Piedmonts and Sweet Caps opened with t206s inside. Both had only one card per pack. The HLCs with t205s in them had 2 cards per pack. I would assume this was the case since they were not the typical shell and slide box.

I am pretty confident Old Mill and Hindu's both had 2 cards per pack. The same is true for Polar Bear. That being said, I've heard that one of the Polar's opened from the find of the 5 unopened packs yielded 4 or 5 cards. Is it true - who knows, but I'm assuming Polar probably contained 2 and did the HLC in the 205's.

It appears that the Hindu and Old Mill packs with southern leaguers had two cards each. The top card in the pack shown in the above Old Mill ad from the Atlanta Constitution looks like Juan Viola (Violat). Hindu packs also seem to have had two cards. Lipset's Encyclopedia mentions a Hindu ad in a New Orleans paper stating that there were “2 PICTURES of Southern League Players in Every Box.” Also, based on the American Tobacco Company letter at page 146 of the November 2005 Sports Market Report, it seems that packs of Tolstoi included one card of a baseball subject and one card of a non-baseball subject—-either an athlete from another sport or a military subject.

Thanks for the feedback.

Does anyone have the hindu ad? I know there's a pic of it in Mark Peavy's t206 pamphlet, but it's not very clear who the players are in the ad.

Anyone?
Thanks.
Rob

There were two Hindu ads.

The first ad showed a pack with major league subjects Dooin and Waddell (Throwing). There is a picture of this ad in Lipset's Encyclopedia.

The second ad showed a pack with southern leaguers Bernhard and Carey.

Jon,
Thanks much for posting those! I guess that answers my questions about how many cards came in hindu and old mill packs.

I'm still curious why these ads seem to be plentiful COMPARED to other cigarette brands that contained baseball pictures?

Especially since old mill and hindu promoted in southern, non-major league cities such as new orleans (hindu ads) and atlanta (old mill ad).

Robert

Does anybody here know if the T210 Old Mill cards were also distributed two in a pack?

I believe the T210's were only one a pack.
