This new business of picking up cabinet photos for $1, writing a major leaguer's name and team on the back and then selling it in a private auction is getting as popular as slabbing pictures out of books. You could write it off as the seller being duped except for the "private auction" part - it's obvious this seller is intentionally trying to deceive ebayers:

I've said it many times before and I'm sure I will say it many times in the future: Unless you know and thoroughly trust the seller, do not bit in Private eBay auctions. Anyone who automatically bypasses private auctions, automatically bypasses 90+ perfect of the fakes-- including this Not-King Kelly photograph.

He listed it where it wouldn't get very many "hits."

The seller ended the auction after several people told him that it wasn't Kelly.

I saw this seller's (mkreu37161) most recent auction with the less then authentic Hoss Radbourne, Addie Joss, etc., photos up for auction to "private" bidders. I took a look at his feedback and on the fourth page I found a remark that pretty much sums up this seller. It was from eBay member:friesman-67 and I quote " Complaint : Dude, thanks for the fast shipping but it's not real. Did you know that?????" That really is the question, isn't it?

I didn't notice at the time that it was the same guy who had earlier offered the 'Addie Joss' and 'Frank Baker' photographs. Obviously this King Kelly (and wife) was not an innocent mistake.

that he bought a lot of these from the same person, and was duped. There are a lot of wishful thinkers out there!

Scott, I would buy that as an excuse from him if he wasn't offering the photos in private auctions and he hadn't been warned about the authenticity of his photos before he offered this King Kelly.

I can promise you that this seller has no idea what King Kelly's wife looks like.

I should point out that I don't know what King Kelly's wife looks like either-- then, I'm not offering photographs supposedly of her for auction on eBay.

and, to his credit, his response:

Hi from Mark.

Thanks for your note & concern.

I have recently been told by a few persons who are more knowledge then I am that this item may not be authentic.

In response to this info, I am ending this auction early with no bids.

I am going to have someone legitimate in the field review the item and if it is authentic, I will relist. If not, I will know I was taken. Better me than someone else on EBAY as it is all about the Community.

I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused & I appreciate your concern and input.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Cheers - Mark

I'm sorry, but the guy's a scam artist. As I mentioned before, he had already been warned that the baseball photos he was putting up were not authentic. You may also notice if you look at his current and past auctions that only his old 'baseball' photo auctions are private autctions. None of his other auctions are private. For some reason he felt no need to make his Sammy Sosa rookie card or computer games private auctions. Just his fake cabinet cards.

By the way, I received the exact same email response from him twice, when I asked him two totally different questions.

Tom - don't be fooled. I doubt he's even reading your emails. He probably has a file of canned responses for when he gets caught in various acts of deception.

..so who are these experts he will consult? You and David have as much experience id'ing pre-1900 photos as anyone I know.

I always find it amusing when a seller is offering on eBay, for example, a bunch of PSA and PRO cards and only the PRO cards are offered as private auctions (You can switch AAA for PRO in the last sentence, if you choose). If questioned about this, invariably the seller will fake innocence and claim that there's abolutely nothing wrong with PRO cards or, if there is, he had no idea.

It's also funny when PRO and AAA sellers say they have to go to private auctions because of ilegitimate interference and harrasment by outsiders in their auctions. How come this type of outsider intererence seems to only happen to those selling PRO, AAA and fakes, and not to everyone else?
