Default Ugliest Player as Depicted on Card?

I know this poll cannot compete with the "beater" poll or the "favorite E card poll", however while browsing eBay, I came across an E96 and just seeing the his picture made me wonder who holds the title of having the ugliest, worst picture on a baseball card? I mean, who's picture is so ugly, they surely wished their mug didn't grace the card to begin with?

This might not be exactly what you had in mind. But a flat-out a$$ shot? C'mon, he couldn't have been happy about that.

Okay, okay, it's not a photo -- and the guy wasn't exactly Quasimodo in real life. Nevertheless...he couldn't have been thrilled with the depiction...

I think this is really an ugly card, but it isn't really the player who is so ugly. This looks like a cartoon, with a wrong-hand glove added in. This card also has a slight color misalignment that makes him look to the stars.

Hopefully Dan McKee will grace this thread with an r337 of Babe Ruth. At least that's what card says. Looks more like a gorilla in a baseball uniform to me.

When I first saw his card, I didn't think it was ugly, but it was sure funny.
He reminded me of Dumbo.

He and Narleski were the one/two punch, and best relievers for the Indians in 1954 (111 - 43).
The Indians just couldn't stop Dusty Rhodes (hangovers) and the NY Giants.

This one was inspired by the posted Freeman and Burns cards -- also cartoonish. (The expression on his face isn't flattering, either -- shades of Lennie in 'Of Mice & Men'...)

party foul on the size of this scan....please resize it...I did scans of T3's at 1/2 - 3/4 size and they did ok...nothing personal ..thanks much..moderator dude

Nothing personal taken...first day posting photos and can't seem to get the hang of it. They either come out too small and only can be viewed by clicking on them, or otherwise super giganto size. Let's give this another go...

Those were two fine relievers in 1954.
The Polo Grounders couldn't do anything wrong during the 1954 series.
Mays/Wertz

OK you guys, now that you've seen the fotos, we can't say that it was just the card.

It feels sooooo politically incorrect to say it (especially when I've nagged my kids to death with 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all...'). But okay, I'll admit it -- yeah, the poor guy really does have elephantitis of the ears.

(Would this qualify for second place in that department??)

Permit me a tangent away from the topic of "ugly" ballplayers. If memory serves (though it don't serve very well)I recall on the back of one of Don Mossi's fifties cards it says: "Don is a postman in the off-season." That little quote for me has always neatly tidied up the difference between the bygone days of baseball and the modern game. Can you feature any of today's players working a joe job in the off-season?

Now back to our regularly scheduled topic . . .

Edited one year later to get things correct. Johnny Klippstein's '53 Topps card informed that "Johnny delivers mail during the off-season." As for Don Mossi, he wouldn't have won any beauty contests but he seems like a decent chap.

"All in all, Don Mossi is a successful man. He is in good health, has a happy family life, is fairly prosperous, and is satisfied with his lot in life. Perhaps some of today's wealthy but troubled stars, who make more in a half a season than Mossi and his contemporaries did during their entire careers, could learn a thing or two from this quiet country gentleman."

I first saw him in a pre game stint at the stadium when he first came up.

I'm sitting there and all of a suddan someone jumps out of the Yank dugout - dressed up in short pants, a flimsy shirt with a string tie, wearing a little round hat, a large hula hoop ring in one hand, and looking more like Little Lord Fauntleroy than Fauntleroy did.
He skips out to the baseline and proceeds to hop and skip around the bases with that hula hoop ring in his hand.
It brought down the stadium.
It didn't stop until he returned to the dugout.
The rest is history.
He was never far from his mentor. ... the wee perfessor.
*
*
BUT damn, he does look a little like Dumbo in that card.

Interesting segway, actually -- I'll add my two cents on this point, and then let everyone get back to the business at hand -- selection of baseball's fugliest player.

We've waxed poetic on this subject before many times (especially after watching one of those great nostalgic programs on the Yankee Channel).

We weren't around in the good old days, but both have said that the players, and the sport itself, appeal to us in a way that the modern era just doesn't. The values and priorities were altogether different. Even the game seemed to be better -- a team actually playing as a TEAM rather than just a handful of stars grappling for the spotlight and a better contract. Maybe it's just as simple as that -- the incentive to play today is more of a financial one, whereas in the earlier days it was for the love of the game. Yes? No?

Perhaps we're painting an overly romanticized image of the past -- and any of the oldtimers can tell us if that's the case. But it would be interesting to see what the percentage of today's players (in any sport) that have held down a "regular" job for any length of time before entering the majors. Picture someone like Alex Rodriguez (by way of example only, I don't want to insult any fans) finding himself out of a job, in desperate need of money, and fresh out of options -- is his first thought going to be to find a "regular Joe" job to support himself and his family -- like applying for a carrier job at the post office??? LMAO! The guys who played in the early days of baseball retired and just went back to leading normal, "regular Joe" lives for the most part. Today, these guys don't have a clue what to do with themselves when their careers are finally over -- and unless they find a niche in broadcasting or coaching, many of them wind up either wasting or making a complete mess out of the remainder of their lives.

I haven't even posted this yet, and already the Karl Malone comment has all but shattered my little theory, as well. #$*(#@$*$^ Oh well. I've already typed this out, so there it is. But I imagine he has to be the exception rather than the rule. Now, there's an interesting sub-topic: how many professional players have a "regular" job in the off-season?

If I was a ballplayer (even at the minimum salary of 340K or whatever it is this week) my off season job would be to stay in shape. On the back of '60's and '70's cards you always read how this player sold cars or insurance or whatever in the off season, but once salaries spiked up they didn't need to. Besides expansion, small ballparks, steroids, juiced balls, etc this might be a viable answer to the increase in hitters production and the increased longevity of many pitchers.
Sorry for the hijack. I would hope to never see as ugly a player as Don Mossi, with an honorable mention to Wally Moon's unibrow.

With all due respect to his unfortunate and early end, Addie Joss was not an attractive man. His picture on the E254 Colgan's is pretty bad.

Max posted a T206 of Egan which is pretty raw when it comes to male beauty. My one and only D381 Fleishmann's is of this same R.J. Egan, and let's just say the T206 sure does enhance his attractiveness. The D381 of him is a close-up black and white head and shoulders shot, and it sure would knock the Wheaties out of those with weak constitutions. Wish I could post it--maybe someone out there with this card could do us all a favor(?)and share this virtual carp out of water man.

7:34 PM Anyone have a scan of that W card depicting Cobb---it's a drawing of a balding Cobb that is just horrid.

IF I had been home at the time this request was posted, I likely would have replied right away. However, I was NOT home when the Bald Cobb card was mentioned. Shortly after my last post, I received a call from my 5 year old's teacher. Apparently, he and the boys were playing one of their favorite games -- Darth Vader kills Luke Skywalker. My darling Darth, ever the showmanship, decided to take a full-speed-ahead flying leap of death toward one of the three Lukes involved in the battle. Not actually possessing any powers to speak of, and not having the foresight to entirely understand the consequences of launching the attack, Darth's assault ungracefully concluded when he landed head first -- onto concrete, of course. No less than six hours in the ER and a CAT scan later (in which he played Han Solo frozen in carbon as well as Luke winging off to battle Darth), all's well that ends well, except for a really nasty, walnut sized bump in the middle of his forehead. Which is no matter to him, because as he said to me as we were finally heading home, Young Annakin had a lot of really cool battle scars, too. Sigh.

I had forgotten how ugggggly this stamp is. Eeeeesh. Here it is, folks...is this the winner of the fugly prize?? Honorable mention maybe, even for a late midnight post, all things considered?? Sorry about the small photo, but I can't seem to figure out the right size for uploading on the photo hosting site. They post either too small or too big. It does enlarge if you click on it, though.

To some, it's tantamount to sacrilege to say anything against the man -- so I'm treading lightly. Let's just say he didn't have "classic features". Some photos of him may be worse than others, but let's be serious here. Have you ever seen a "good" photo or card of him? My grandmother would have said something along these lines: The Babe was first, second, and third in line when God handed out Heavenly gifts and blessings for smacking the ball, but must've gotten out of line to use the men's room when it was time to receive good looks.

:=)
