Babe Ruth and Walter Johnson considered Hal Chase the best 1st baseman, ever. The folks at American Litho. must of liked Chase, too.
Since they featured him on 5 of their T206 cards.
My very 1st T206 card (1981) was the Blue Hal Chase portrait (shown here with the OLD MILL back)....and, my quest has been endless.

Default WALTER JOHNSON and FRANK DELAHANTY

WALTER JOHNSON......in my opinion, the best pitcher there ever was.

[linked image][linked image]

[linked image]
[linked image]

FRANK DELAHANTY......the youngest of the brothers, Delahanty. Frank was only 20 years old (playing for Syracuse of the New York Lge.),
when he identified the body of his brother "Big Ed" (who died at Niagara Falls in 1903).

Great cards guys, thanks for posting them. It's very interesting to see what T206 subjects various collectors favor.

Jon

Very neat array of Downs cards.

As I am sure you know, Downs can be found with the BROAD LEAF 350 and DRUM backs.
I have not seen Downs with CAROLINA BRIGHTS, EPDG, nor OLD MILL backs. However, it
is possible that Downs was printed with these backs

Your TOLSTOI / Downs card is the first one I have seen. The Downs card is one of the
Minor Leaguer's I usually look for, so I'll be on the look-out for the missing backs for you.

Thanks for sharing your cards with us.

Ted - thanks. I've seen the pop reports and noticed the BL and Drum. Haven't seen or heard of the others you mentioned also. I've passed on picking up other BLs and Drums - in hopes of finding the Downs' first. Someday.

1st....I'm very surprised that an OLD MILL of Downs has not surfaced.

2nd....regarding the DRUM /Downs, I vaguely recall seeing one many years ago. But, haven't seen one since. It might be unique.

3rd....I might be able to get you a BROAD LEAF 350 Downs. I'm checking in to it. No guarantee, though.

Good Morning Ted - I am almost certain Downs was not printed with an Old Mill back. If he had been he would also have been printed with a Polar Bear back which we know he wasn't or an EPDG back which has never been confirmed. No player has been confirmed with just a Tolstoi and Old Mill back that I am aware of.

There is a small group that were just included in the Tolstoi run and no other assorted backs and I believe Downs is one.

I would have to go with the popular vote of Matty and Johnson, but since those guys are pretty well covered, I will post my favorite infielder. I have upgrade most of these, but still like this shot the best. I have also added the Tolstoi, only the AB to go!
Here is the link to all with the upgrades included:

You bring up an interesting interrelation between T-backs regarding OLD MILL's, of which I would like to expand on. Not all
T206 subjects are possible with the OLD MILL back, even though they exist with an EPDG back and a POLAR BEAR back.
Another T-back factor is in play here. The SOVEREIGN 350 No-Prints subjects will not be found with an OLD MILL back....
regardless if they exist with both EPDG and POLAR BEAR backs.

It's interesting to note that there are approx. 60 - 350 series Minor Leaguer's that do not exist with an OLD MILL back.
Probably, due to the larger series of T210's.

Anyhow, I'm in agreement with you that Downs most likely was not printed with an OLD MILL back.

Also,

JIM

You probably know this, but your favorite guy, Doc. Merle Adkins will not be found with an OLD MILL back.
Since Adkins is a SOVEREIGN 350 No-Print.

Dang Ted, I am still beating myself up about passing on that American Beauty Collins a couple years ago just because the Piedmont was $25 cheaper. I still have your pic saved on my computer when I need a little AB Collins hit!

Hope all is well,

As the years go by, I'm beginning to think that Eddie Collins with an AB 350 back is a considerably scarcer card than it was originally thought to be.

That no hitter when he was with St. Louis!!!

From Wikipedia...
During his first season in the Majors, he was able to pitch occasionally in relief, but on the final day of the 1891 season, October 4, Breitenstein was allowed to start and he pitched a no-hitter against the Louisville Colonels, an 8–0 victory. He faced the minimum number of batters of 27, allowed just one base on balls, which was erased by a double play or by a pickoff play. It was also the last no-hitter thrown in the American Association, as the league folded following the season.

Excellent.

Now, how many other MLB pitchers have pitched a No-Hitter in their 1st Major League start ?

Bobo Holloman. And in the back of my mind I think there's someone else.

As for Breitenstein, I didn't know about the 27 batters faced, about it being the last AA no hitter, nor about the Louisville Colonels being involved. I did recall he threw a no hitter in his first start, and that he was with St. Louis.

And having re-read the question, you didn't ask who else, you asked how many. I think 2, but it may be 1 or 3...
