Default Most aesthetically pleasing T206 back design

I looked around and didn't see a poll on this and I'm very curious about it. What do you think is the most aesthetically pleasing T206 back design? Not most desirable or anything, just the design that looks best to you.

Since there's a limit to 10 options on the poll, I'm grouping a few that are very similar (while leaving off blank back and Ty Cobb backs, due to the debate around if they are included in T206 to begin with).

Edit: I left of Uzit, too, since there really aren't any design elements to that back.

Last edited by AGuinness; 08-07-2018 at 06:20 PM. Reason: Uzit add.

Hands down Polar Bear, I don't think it gets more unique than that back followed by Red Hindu and UZIT. Such beautiful colors.

Polar Bear is great, and certainly stands out strongest amongst the other backs. But something really clicks with the Carolina Brights for me.

Definitely a beauty. By far the nicest frame amongst the backs IMO.

I think there is something special about the Old Mill southern league variation as well, it's nice seeing a "wordy" back.

Polar Bear is tops for T206. The Red Cycle T207 backs reigns supreme over all backs though and it’s not even close imo.

They won't come anywhere near the top in this poll, but I think if people were honest about it, and disregarded their natural bias towards rarity, then both Piedmont and Sweet Caporal would win out. They're the most common, but also the best looking.

EPDG is my favorite. I'm a little surprised it currently has only 2 votes. But Sovereign is my 2nd favorite & it has yet to get a vote.

I think the Sweet Cap Fac. 649 Overprint is the sharpest SC.

Sweet Cap is a little busy for my taste. Piedmont is nice, but I like how CB, Cycle, Drum and a couple others feel more balanced to me.

Sorry to those who would go with Uzit or an unframed back, as I had limited options for the poll.

Barry and David, I agree with you. We form a trifecta.

Especially, the AB 460 back since we know it was printed in the last press runs of T206's in early 1911.

I like Carolina Brights the best. Love the border, the font used on "Carolina Brights" and the banner and wreath in the middle.

Those are my two favorites, I voted for Sovereign, but EPDG was a close second.

After clicking on the link and seeing them all side by side I concur. I actually prefer the red cross back but dont believe they're considered part of the set.

Tell me the Red Hindu does not pop! My bad for the poor pic, but here are all your "rare" backs, including brown old mill and brown Lenox (dont have a Ty Cobb back). We have already seen an AB 460 and (a bunch of) EPDG backs, Maybe someone can post pics of the others

I think we're all too biased. Like someone said earlier, Piedmont is a pretty nice looking back, but we've all just seen too many of them. I think if we really wanted to know which back was the most aesthetically pleasing, we would need to ask our spouses, siblings, friends, co-workers, etc and add up all the data. My personal picks are CB, Hindu, Broad Leaf, AB with frame, Cycle, Polar Bear, but I think my preference is influenced by the rarity of the backs.

The Carolina Brights back is too busy for me. Polar Bear is different with the black background, but it's just not very good looking. The Hindu logo always reminds me of Heinz ketchup - so also not a favorite.

Okay, asked my wife, who doesn't know anything about the rarity of these things. She said (unprompted) that the Hindu back looks like the Heinz logo, so she doesn't like it.

Her top three:

Piedmont

Carolina Brights

Tolstoi

Fwiw, I agree with everybody here. My favorites are Polar Bear and Carolina Brights. Sweet Caps are the worst, I'll take the Heinz logo over those ones.

I agree with these specifics on the Carolina Brights. The font is great and helps it stand out, with the wreath a unique and not overpowering element that really separates it.

I don't think the uniqueness of a back is a bias on this one (although I guess many biases are not evident), in a similar way the Uzit is one of my least favorite because it lacks a frame and other design elements that make the others appealing to me.

Maybe take the results of this poll and weed out the backs that don't get votes and make a new thread with 10 stand alone backs? I'm sure some people will hate me for suggesting another t206 thread on the main page

OR we could do a head-to-head seeded tourney, like March Madness, to see which back survives to the end. Then we could have an entry for each series, factory, etc., which I think brings the field to 39. Will Sweet Cap 350 Fac 25 defeat Sweet Cap 350 Fac 30, or will Fac 30 prevail?!

Now there are 30 options for polls but I reserve the right to go back to less if need be. You are welcome to start a different poll if you want to. This thread could potentially be locked. Whatever you want to do is fine. Interesting poll.

Imagine a smoke-filled room on Madison Avenue in 1910 discussing this very question, and the scraps of discarded ad back designs on the floor.

From the back of the room, a voice is overheard saying, "The Cubs won't win another World Series for 108 years, but grown men will be discussing our decisions tonight on baseball card backs when they do."

How true.
