Default How can you get photo tabs removed from a card?

Posted By: Josh K.

Does anyone know if the black phototabs (which have apparently become stuck to the cards) can be safely removed (and if so, how)? The auction listing states that the cards can be removed from the album, but that trying to remove the tabs from the cards will likely cause damage/tearing. I apologize if something like this has been covered already.

After all of that...

you will find out that the Hoyt is from the 1922 Series of 120 and NOT from the 1921 Series of 80...

and you will be very frustrated.

Test to make sure it's water-based glue.

1. remove the least desirable one by cutting the card/backing from the page.
2. prepare a luke-warm bowl of distilled water (I don't use distilled but everyone else does).
3. Dab a piece of terry-cloth like material in the warm water and gently apply it to one of the corners until fully-soaked.
4. gently push one of the corner-holders away from the card to see if the glue dissolves - e.g, if you are working on the top left corner of the card, push up and to the left at the edge of the holder which is facing the middle of the card.

If the holder pushes away cleanly without damaging the card, cut out each card and soak separately for the least amount of time necessary - usually about 2-5 minutes. You have to do it this way (full soaking) because otherwise the card will usually warp due to uneven application of water. If you become truly expert at this, you can sometimes apply by hand just enough water to soak through the glue and barely into the card. Then full soaking isn't necessary.

5. "dry" the card by pressing between typing paper until as much water as possible is removed. When it's ready you should not see any effect on the typing paper when you press.
6. Place card in a fresh sheet of typing paper, in a book. Put weight on top of the book
7. Remove after two days. Some leave longer, but I think it's unecessary.

Josh - if you would prefer, you can mail me a card and I'll test it for you. I've done this for other board members. Fun for me, free for you.

Soak them off is correct. Soak the entire card or page, tamp dry then put in between a thin cloth and 2 heavy books for a few days to dry.

Actually, there is no mystery - the listing states that they are from the 120 series.

The typing paper gives perfect results. My guess is there is a chance that the cloth could leave extremely small bumps - cloth is not perfectly smooth and we are talking about drying wet paper pulp.

After looking at the scan, and the paper the cards have been attatched to,I wouldn't be surprised if you have some "acid burn" on the backside of cards. If so,I would suggest keeping them pressed between two sheets of PH neutral matbaord. This will take a while, but the acid that has migrated from the mounting sheet will migrate back to the more neutral paper. These matboards can be bought at any reputable frame shop.Make sure you ask for museum quality,PH neutral, white matboard. There is a difference between "acid free" and PH neutral.
