Took a trip down to L.A. last weekend for the All American Antiques Show at Glendale...and the Long Beach Flea same weekend...L.A. is tough for antiques but I did ok...John Kanuit was set up at Glendale and I got the two trophies above from him...a 26" tall swimming trophy...and an 8" wide powerboat trophy....plus a little 8 1/2" wide baseball platter I think is for the Detriot Tigers c1910...seen them around but can't recall this small one...grabbed it for $30.00...gal said she got it at a small flea in L.A...interesting....

I pretty much zeroed out at Long Beach....got there a little late like 6:30AM...one measly shot put for $30.00....Best thing I saw was an early restorable motorcycle but already sold, see white one below...Seller said it was a Henderson...cursory look into I learned Schwinn bought Henderson and Excelsior between 1912 and 1917...

So anyway when I left I was just going to make a quick stop at a mall in Long Beach before heading home and I stumbled on a 9" tall plaster bust of Knute Rockne...I already have a galvano one...but I kind of like this painted yellow one better...

Did my usual cruise down Sunset Blvd in my convertible after dinner at Canters on Fairfax...down the street from CBS studios and the farmers market...L.A. has great top down weather!!...I have a little hobby of trying all the old school restaurants in L.A...Canters is pretty much a 24 hr L.A. institution...

Good stuff, Carlton! As I remember, Mike Wolfe of American Pickers goes nuts over Hendersons.

Used to live near Cantor's in the sixties (I was just a kid btw). You could have posted a picture of your pastrami reuben for us.

Yeah, that's pretty normal in LA, and it isn't even Starbucks!

I'd like a translation of that entire bill. With handwriting like that, they ought to be signing balls.

I missed Canter's when I used to visit LA to see a then gf. I did visit Phillippe's when I was out there. Great dipped roast beef sandwhich. Then it was off to a Dodger game. Great times.

Carlton...

LOVE Canter's as well as all those pickups. That food is worth almost any price. Glad they kept their classic logo as well.

Tell us about the John Rogers Football Statue. Yours is whiter than any I've seen. Is yours vintage or a reproduction? Isn't the chalk surface usually coated with a "wash" or other glaze?

Never knew you had that piece... How about a better close-up look?

Great stuff,
Mark

Oh yeah my John Roger's Football statue...yeah I got that 20 or so years ago....think I paid $1200.00...and it's been painted with Latex paint...The guy never told me when he shipped it that it needed to be stripped and repainted...back then before the internet they were much harder to find...so I kept it...I need to find someone to strip and repaint it...
