Dugout Treasures Site Updated- 19th Century Additions

Hi All,

It's been quite some time...many months, in fact... since I had the opportunity to sit down and go thru my website to delete items that were sold and traded, and add all the new acquisitions.

After purging over 25 items and updating it with at least that many more, our site...www.dugouttreasures.com ...is once again up to date.

Many of the new additions are to our 19th Century Era holdings and reflect the trends and trajectory that our collection is taking. If interested, please check us out and let us know what you think.

Although nothing is technically "for sale" we're always open to talking trades and deals particularly for 19th Century bats, balls, gloves (yea, right ) and equipment related memorabilia.

Guess I could have placed this in the "Sept. Pick Ups" thread but these pieces fall so much in line with my last post, I thought I might just pick it up here...

1. Circa 1850's/ 1860's era Belted or "H Stitch" Ball
2. Circa 1880's / 1890's Figure 8 Style Base Ball

A recent pick up, this late 19th Century Era bat has been decorated with gold and red rings and inscribed..."Eagle Prize Bat"..."Brooklyn Writers Nine".

Through concerted research and consultation with SABR's 19th Century / Early Bklyn Base Ball experts we're confident that this piece was awarded as a prize to a team of writers from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle sometime in the 1880's.

One source feels its possible that, given his track record with this sort of thing thru the 1860's and 1870's, Henry Chadwick himself "might" have had a hand in the issuance of a prize bat of this kind.

One can dream!!

The bat is 33" long and was clearly not game used...it's style, condition, and decor point to its creation as a trophy/presentation piece.

Many thanks for the kind words. I've been fortunate to run into some pretty good luck of late as well as some really quality guys in the hobby open to working on trades and sales for 19th C. equipment.

My pursuit of interesting and quality items from the 19th century is moving ahead SLOWLY as the"good stuff" is either too elusive or expensive. Undeterred, I continue to look and these are my two latest pieces...

Really cool piece...an 1887 invoice for the sale of balls, catchers masks, score books, and gloves to an "official agent"of AG Spalding Sporting Goods in Newark NJ...

Great stuff Jon. The Reach catalog is in unbelievable conditon and full of great images, and I love the Spalding invoice. E.G. Koenig was a very big Sporting Goods retailer in the late 19thC and early 20thC in Newark. I have/had a glove, bat and uniform with their label.

I have taken a greater interest in 19thC paper and advertisig lately, but only started the hunt. (and Mike's 19thC postal covers thread has me jonesing for more). Picked up this Spalding card a couple weeks ago on ebay for a few bucks. (back and front scans below). Not terribly full of content like your invoice, but couldn't pass it up for price.

Since our April attendance at the SABR 19th Century Research Conference in Cooperstown we've added a few new pieces to the collection. Thought I might finally get around to posting and sharing them...

First item is a c. 1860's CDV of a ball player from the Baltimore area. Cursory research has yielded that his uniform is very, very similar to those worn by the Pastimes Amateur Athletic Club that fielded a ball team in Baltimore during the 1860's.

We'll have to do a bit more digging before we can connect him to a specific team, but regardless of identification, the CDV is fantastic piece of early base ball photography...

Next item we feel very fortunate to have acquired is a circa 1870's Peck & Snyder ring bat. This all original and completely un-cracked bat is the very first of its kind that we have ever seen in person, let alone owned, and is the lone piece of P&S equipment in our entire collection...

Our most recent pick up is this c.1880's Wright & Ditson Ring Bat. Very similar to the one featured in the famous "King" Kelly cabinet photo, this un-cracked, 36" example is the lone W&D ring bat that we've ever come across...

Just picked up this terrific 19th century sporting goods catalog from Wright & Ditson. The graphics are just great and there is a ton of baseball material inside. Lots of other sports represented here as well.

Always on the hunt for 19th c. equipment (bats, balls, belts, uniform items, etc), images (CDV's, tintypes, cabinets), and equipment related paper such as this catalog.
