What would you do if you were given 1 million dollars to spend only on baseball cards... I guess I would start by completing high grade 33 Goudeys, T206, and Mantle sets but I guess that is what the average collector would do...Any other opinions?

if i had 1 mil to blow on cards i wouldn't worry about cards that retained their value. if i have a mil to blow on cards i'm probably not too worried on future returns. i'd pick up the cards i've always wanted, maybe a real nice t227 set or try to put together the allen and ginter sets. i've always loved the artwork for both of those issues. i also would love to put together an m101-4 set. i don't know if there are any completed ones or not but i love that set because it features actual photographs. the one thing i definitely wouldn't do is spend the whole thing on cards i thought someone with a million dollars "should have", i.e. those high dollar t206's or 52 mantles.

With 1 million, I would piece together a Smokey Joe Wood player collection, pick up an E107 (regular back) Jimmy Collins, and start working on a Morehouse Baking Red Sox set. My guess is that I will have some left over, so I would continue to add to my Red Sox type collection.

I have watchlisted around 40 items on REA that total (so far) at $385K ($452K with vig). If I had a million dollars to spend on cards I'd go for broke on all of them. As it is, I may have a run at just a couple.

Vintage cards, Hawaiian maidens, plenty penguins and more at . .

I would buy a maximum of 20 Monster cards, not condition rarities but classic & rare cards
T-3 Ty Cobb would be 1st item I'd search out

of what I want and the classically popular rarities.

Hopefully, there will be plenty of intersection within those populations, but I can guarantee you it wouldn't be 100%

A high-grade T200 set
Top Tier HOFers in top shape (modern rookies and pre-war most popular)
Complete every pre-war Cubbies team set
highest grade possible on the T206 Lajoie-(bat)
and I would try to find something really different that appealed to me.

wouldn't bother with the T206 Honus Wagner...too many other things to have fun with!

I would buy as many PSA 8 T206's with short borders as I could. Then I would sell them. I need a big write off ....

Finish off the monster.

grab a high grade 1914 CJ set, 1933 Goudey and 1952 Topps.

There is simply no fun in grabbing all these cards at once.  IMO there is too much fun and knowledge lost when optaining complete sets in one swoop.

I prefer the chase..

Leon,
If I establish a chartible organization, you can donate $1 million of your treasured and exceptional cards from your prive stock, you would get your $1 million w/o and I would be indebted to you for the rest of my life. Just trying to help you out. Hell, that may only be 4-5 cards for you.

I doubt I have any cards that are worth a relative lot of money anymore since selling off some of my 19th Century prizes......But the others are a lot of fun too. Money certainly wasn't why I started collecting but making a few bucks while enjoying the hobby has been a lot of fun too. Whomever said that the hunt is a lot/most of the fun is entirely correct, imo.. The friendships made are a big part of it too......regards

If i had a million to spend, i probably wouldn't change too much from what i have been doing, though it may (or may not) increase the pace of my activities.

Guess that it would depend on what opportunities are out there, and whether or not they make sense.

I think what many of us would find out, is that a million can evaporate pretty quickly in this hobby, and if spent without some degree of restraint, thinks might not work out as originally planned.

Not saying that i wouldn't spend more, but i would pause before rushing into anything big.

If I had a million to spend on cards, my head would explode. I've tried answering this question three times in the last five minutes and I keep changing my mind.

I'm pretty sure I'd get that motorcycle guy that Wonka used to use as his avatar, though.
