Default Complete graded Mayo set - finally made the goal !!

Posted By: David Seaborn

Well,

It took about eight years but I wanted to share with the board that I finally completed a grade Mayo Cut Plug set. Sometimes it's hard for a set collector because it takes so darn long for a goal to be reached, especially with a tough set like the Mayos. Thanks you to the board members for helping this come true.

It's a nice set (only three cards are graded below VG). FYI- toughest five cards were (in no particular order) Corcoran, Ewing (Cincinnati), Dahlen, Ward (2B), and Pfeffer (retired). This was a darn tough set! I know there have been several Mayos up for sale lately but that's basically been the Mayo collectors selling there lower dupes because of the near set that was broken up in the last Mastro auction. Not many out there are tougher to complete and yet you still have a realistic chance. I encourage those thinking about a new set to take a look at the Mayos. They are rare, have a unique design, cover an important time period for baseball cards, have several HOFers, and look darn nice. Thanks and I can't believe it's finally done!

The entire set can be viewed at the following link or by going to www.photobucket.com and typing in the keyword oldoriole.

Congrats on finishing one of my favorite sets. Are you going to go for the football players now?

Jay

I like to sit outside, drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home, I would be arrested. So, I go to baseball games and fit right in.

Wow!!! Nice set and tough to find in decent shape. That N300 set is one of the nicer sets from the 19th century. Congratulations, I couldn't imagine what it must have felt like to have that last card in your hand.

It's no easy feat finishing this set, especially in nice condition and graded too!
Grading these are tough as unfortunately many Mayo's have been retouched with black markers and ao are not gradeable.
Finally, thanks for your help in getting me closer to finishing my set..only 2 to go.
Alan

David:

Glad to see my Ward 2B from the REA auction went to such a worthy cause. Congratulations!!! It is one of my favorites sets, even though I just have one card (Ward Retired).

Thanks everybody.

Cat - Yep, that Ward (2B) was the last one I needed. I still remember missing it last summer. So glad you put it back up for sale. I had one previously, but it was an absolute beater (although from the old Richard Egan collection).

Alan - I keep looking at the SGC set registry page for the Mayos. It won't be long for you, especially since we won't be bidding against each other anymore! Thanks again for your help on the set.

Congratulations! Small set; big challenge. I've always liked the images of Tommy McCarthy and Mike Griffin in this issue.

I think all us Old Judge collectors will probably have liked it a lot better when you were bidding against Alan for Mayos!

you're a better man than I am, Gunga Din; I don't even have the fortitude to complete my 1971 Topps set.

Congratulations, David. I've been stuck on 46 (of 48) for quite a while, and most of mine aren't graded.

I'm still missing Brouthers (Balt.) & Pfeffer (2nd B.). I've seen and bid on both a time or two, but came up short.

I 2nd Kevin's comments . . .

Great accomplishment, that certainly took a great investment in time & money.

Does this mean your efforts will now be focused to other issues such as Baltimore OJs?

CONGRATS & Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Joe-

I'm still finishing up a few other sets, and probably will be for quite some time since I only go after 19th century sets. I'm definitely working on the Baltimore OJs, unfortunately so are several other people. I can tell you that more than a few times I've been outbid at the end of an auction and muttered "That darn Dan McKee"!

Great set and congrads on completing it. 8 years is a long time but well worth it. BTW, the Anson card is sweet. I hope to complete the T206 set in less than 10 years. 123 cards in 1 year, so 8 years sounds like a good number. Congrads again. Joe
