Default Set Collector Question: How do you track your cards?

Posted By: Jeff W.

I recently began collecting the T206 set and want to track the name and back of each player. I was thinking that excel would be the call to track this set, however, I am excel illiterate!

Any recommendations? Which excel program is best?

Any information is appreciated
Jeff W.

Hi Jeff, I have some options available:

1.) You can print this and write on it:
http://www.mlbvintage.com/t206/print.php

2.) There are a couple checklists here:
http://www.t206.org/resources.php

Look in the far right column and you will see "T206 Printable PDF Checklist" and "T206 Excel Database by Mike Poland".

Hopefully one of those will work for you.

Regards,
-Trae

Default Set Collector Question: How do you track your cards?

Jeff,

Sent you an e-mail with the checklist format I was using. It's real similar to Bill B.'s Super Set format, with a couple minor adjustments. Not sure if it's 100 percent accurate in terms of possible front-back combos, but it's probably close.

Take care,
Steve

Thanks for the info so far!

Trae-

I use mac and when I wnet to change to a certain team on your checklist it didn't change. However, when I went to rare backs or southern leaguers it worked. Am I doing something wrong?

Jeff

Default Set Collector Question: How do you track your cards?

Posted By: Frank Wakefield

After fooling with lists, software, and on and on....

I photocopy pages out of the Standard Catalog of the sets I'm chasing. I mark the ones I have with a pencil. For the white border tobacco cards, I eventually started numbering them, so I could see which one was my 400th card, which one was my 401st... and then I started putting a date down, too. That way I could see how time passed as I closed in on 500, and went beyond. I didn't number and date the other sets.

What is great about that is that I can pick it up while I'm looking at eBay, I don't have to open up more software. I can take the list to a show, to a dealer, to a fellow collector's home... that sure makes swapping cards more practicable.

I HIGHLY recommend a photocopied list. I enlarge mine so it covers the page. I'm no longer much of a fan of reducing it to a Word doc or an Excel sheet. Been to both, done both, paper is better for me.

I use the "T206 Excel Database by Mike Poland" as mentioned above obviously in an Excel spreadsheet.

You can track which back you have with from a simple "pull down" type of menu. It gives you back multipliers and multipliers for condition, whether graded or not.

I also added another column with price I paid so I can easily track "value" vs. "cost".

I find this tool very, very helpful.

There is a My Collection feature on VCP where you can add all your cards on a complete set list. As well as enter the costs and make notes on every card.

I use Excel. Started with a new file. I have the columns assigned to the data I prefer (name, team, back, condition, etc.). When I need to narrow a search all I need to do is sort by the specified column or columns and BAM instant info. This makes handling 900+ (912 to be exact)T206's a breeze. For example I just looked up which cards I have with a Howie McCormick stamp on the reverse and BAM there they were.

Someone out there once sent me a great T206 checklist where you can check off each available back for each card. I wish someone would could send that to me again as I lost it when my computer crashed.

Much thanks, Jantz, but it came as a picture in the e-mail rather than an attachment. Can you try again? Thanks!

I find I still like making marks on a printed checklist in my old price guides the best. Nothing like it for ease at a show.
