Default PSA reholder question - same grade, “new label?”

I recently picked up a card which is in a cracked PSA holder - card looks fine, but the holder is damaged.

If I submit to PSA to reholder, does the original grade carry forward (assuming they agree the card itself isn’t damaged) but would now be in a “new label” PSA slab?

If so, this seems a little odd to me since I see some sellers hype the “new label” slabs as somehow more valuable since (maybe myth) it’s generally agreed that grading standards are more strict now than they were even several years ago.

Hope my question makes sense -

Thx

Jeff

In terms of the new label issue, lots of people love new shiny toys. This is no different. If there is a premium, it’s small, because anyone can get it reholdered for a small price, if they’re willing to wait the months it takes to get it done.

99% of the time you'll receive the same grade and retain the same 'old' serial number... the serial number is the key. That being said it still looks nicer in a new holder, especially if you are trying to flip the card.

As Alex said, people looking for freshly graded cards look at the serial number, not the holder.

10+ years ago, PSA reholdered some of my cards at the National. It was either same day or next day service for around $10. Do they still grade/reholder at the National?

To me, it's a bigger issue with the SGC holders. I think the old ones (especially the label) are kind of crummy and the newer ones are really nice. I do think reholdering makes it look cooler in that case.

No offense to those who have posted above, but do not listen to them. If the holder is cracked, PSA will not honor the grade on the label. They will treat it as a raw card, even if the crack is small and the card clearly hasn't been damaged. They will still treat it as though it were a raw card. It will receive a fresh grade that may or may not reflect the grade in the slab. If the cert is an older cert (starting with a 1 or 0) I would expect it to receive at least a full grade lower, possibly 2 full grades lower today.

If the holder were not damaged, then yes, they would give you the same grade every time.

Thx for all the advice and experience - just for fun, I’ll keep the story going here… I’ll post a close up picture of the card and cracked case and will then repost when I get it back from PSA.

Thx all.
