Default Show Me Your Averill's

Posted By: MacDice19

Around a year ago, I started collecting Earl Averill memorabilia and I would like to see what other collectors have of him. I am not sure if their are many other Averill collectors out there as I have only run into one other. During that time I have become friends with one of his sons and have they have graciously shared numerous photographs and news articles.

Not a card, but a pretty tough program (a little to big for my scanner):

I believe Earl Averill is second from right in the back row of this picture of the 1928 San Francisco Seals.

Phil:
Your 1926 Zeenut Averill is about as nice as my 1927 that I just got off of eBay. Only took me around 8 months to find that one, hopefully getting his 26 and 28 cards won't take me that long as well.

Thanks everyone for sharing.

Mike

Mike:

I've often wondered why the Zeenut cards from the 1920's & 1930's are usually found in such horrible condition when compared to most all other issues from that era? Any thoughts out there on that?

Zeenuts were often played with in a game where they would throw them against the wall and the closest would win the lot (I forget the name of the game). Many kids cut or tore their cards in a rounder shape to make them fly better, and the cards got beat up easily too.

Here are a few Averill cards...

I never knew that Zeenuts were used as a "game" but that would explain how difficult it is to find cards in decent shapes.

If anyone has Averill Zeenuts that they would be interested in selling please contact me off line at mmacculloch@hotmail.com

I wonder if the Zeenuts from the 20's and 30's are more beaten up because they are so unattractive compared to the ones from the early years and therefore there was less compulsion about banging them up against walls and curbs to play the "Zeenut game".
