Judge DredFor the most part people pay a premium to the big auction houses for a few reasons:
Generally, they are reliable and you don't have to deal with too much BS when you deal with them. Yes, you pay dearly for some of the material and Yes they make a lot of money but they also have a lot of overhead.
Reliable (known) Ebay sellers are great but you also pay an ebay premium for bidding in their auctions because they have good customer service and a reputation for doing the right thing. People will bid with confidence and lots of dollars in these auctions.
Where you make out with ebay is when an unknown (or relative unknown) dealer puts something up for auction and people are skeptical about the material. You can get a few good deals this way. This goes on until the word is out that the seller is legit.
Then there are those A-holes that will scam you without regard. It doesn't matter how much money you spent, if the card is a reprint or not as described, you lose money if the seller tells you to pound sand. A lot of these sellers will tell you to "leave me a negative, I don't care." If they succeeded in scamming you that's all they want. If you have clean feedback then you risk the retalliatory feedback and your clean feedback gets hosed over.
I would figure that this is common knowledge but there may be a few that don't understand these concepts.
