While "Hall of Fame" is fresh in the minds of all board members I thought I would start a thread of best/weirdest/funniest names in minor/major league history. This can be current or past. Before I forget I would also like to nominate Jay Miller for the collector's Hall of Fame. I really just want to see him give an acceptance speech while handing the plaque(that he bought) to himself ok...for the names I will start with "Ten Million" and this guy:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1832552841

or he could have just been "crap" .......regards all

Thinking back to an "In Living Color" skit I would like to nominate Dick Buttkiss (Butkus). By the way Leon, let me know if I make it in so I can buy a realllllllllly nice plaque.

If we are talking names on cards, my vote goes to a Cuban card (surprise!) of HOFer Pop Lloyd. On Lloyd's 1920's Aguilitas Segundas card it says "Joe Baseball". The reason remains a mystery.

For 19th Century, my vote goes to Phenomenal Smith.

The Negro Leagues are loaded with great names if we are counting nicknames, including several HOFers. A few are:

- Cool Papa Bell
- Satchel Paige
-Turkey Stearnes
- Bullet Joe Rogan (his name was Wilbur)
- Smokey Joe Williams
- Ghost Marcelle
- Mule Suttles
- Double Duty Radcliffe
- Boojum Wilson
- Cannonball Redding
- Superman Pennington
- Champion Mesa
- Jewbaby Johnson (yes, Jewbaby)
- Moocha Harris
- Heavy Johnson
- Googoo Livingston
- Spot Poles
- Bubbles Anderson
- Neck Stanley
- Stainless Steele
- Jelly Gardner
- Wild Bill Wright

There's a ton more, but that's a decent starter list.

-Ryan

"Death to Flying Things" Ferguson (from 19th Century)
"The Rabbi of Swat" -- actually I forgot who he was. I know he was Jewish and they were trying to market him to New York as the Jewish Babe Ruth or something.
"Silent" Mike Tiernan (19th century)
"Lady" Baldwin (19th Century)
"Wahoo" Sam Crawford (HOF)
"Oil Can" Boyd
"The Mad Hungarian" Al Hrabowski -- there was also a "Mad Russian" I don't recall who
"The White Rat" "Whitey" Herzog
"The Freshest Man Alive" Arlie Latham (19th Century etc.)
"the Road Runner" Ralph Garr
"Kaiser" Wihelm
"the Toy Cannon" Jim Wynn
"piano Legs" Hickman
"the tabasco Kid" Elberfeld
The Vulture" Phil Regan (Relief Pitchers often have cool names these days)
"Foxy" Ned Hanlon -- HOF manager
"Mr. Clean" Steve Garvey -- Very ironic in hindsight
"Jack the Ripper" Clark
-- somewhat common nicknames:
Whitey, Lefty, Chick, Sparky, Chief, Babe, Rudy, Cap, Duke, Red.
...and the nickname Charles Barkley says he always wanted "the Big Unit"

Some of my favorites:

Clyde Klutz
Mickey Klutz
Jack Armstrong (the Reds pitcher, named for the Wheaties character?)

And outside of baseball:

Magic Johnson (think about it)

"Noisey" Johnny Kling (who used to talk incessantly)
"Peerless Leader" Frank Chance
"Wildfire" Jack Schulte
"The Crab" Johnny Evers
"Giant Killer" Jack Pfeister

I'm stuck. Anymore from that team?
