Just curious what your experiences are with feedback on ebay. Checked the stats and found that I've left 887 and received only 649 - very surprising that only 75% of ebayers I've dealt with have left feedback.

But I definitely leave more than I receive. The two biggest culprits I have seen are the following:

A) Low feedback buyers who often never get around to leaving feedback

B) Multiple purchases from one seller where the seller leaves only one feedback for all of the transactions.

I also know quite a few sellers who often do not leave feedback.

A lot of ebayers (most,in fact) actually ask me to leave feedback. I don't mention feedback in any of my correspondence - not that I mind if others do - but that might have an impact.

John - check your feedback rating as compared to the total number of feedbacks you've received. It might indicate "repeat business"...or lack thereof

In case you want to check. Since I only buy, my feedback rate in naturally a little low, but most people leave something--often because I ask a question, which initiates personal contact.

I have bid less and less as time goes on; I'm so often disappointed. Not to (what's the opposite of beating a dead horse?) Terry Knouse, but he sent me a Goodwin Round Album Kelly, with no comment other than to tell me what it was and ask if i was interested. When i called him to say it arrived and I wanted it, he said he didn't want to prejudice my thinking one way or the other, so he didn't tell me what it looked like. No money had changed hands...well, I can't expect everyone to be like that.

Bidding is especially difficult with large items like Goodwin Round Album pages (8+ inches in diameter), and T202s (three-piece cards), which I'm collecting.

I probably sell more than I buy (although it seems like I'm always buying!) and about 5/6 of the people I leave feedback for (over 95% of all transactions) leave me feedback. I guess thats good --of course the ones that matter to your rating aren't the loyal repeat customers but the one-timers.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU MARC AND HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON FEEDBACKS, TO GET A FEEDBACK FROM A CUSTOMER I FEEL IS A GIFT BUT TO GET ONE AS A BUYER I BELIEVE SHOULD BE AUTOMATIC AS A BUYERS FEEDBACK SHOULD BE PREDICATED ON HOW THEY HANDLED HIS/HER PART OF THE TRANSACTION I.E. COMMUNICATIONS AND TIMELY PAYMENT. HERE ARE SOME OF THE REASONS I HAVE BEEN GIVEN BY SELLERS WHO DON'T LEAVE FEEDBACK OR ARE WAY TARDY DOING SO.
1. I HAVE SO MUCH BUSINESS(A PROBLEM EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE) I ONLY LEAVE FEEDBACKS IN BULK ABOUT EVERY 90 DAYS FOR TIME MANAGEMENT REASONS, THE IRONY TO THIS REPLY IS RHAT IT TOOK THEM 5 MINUTES TO WRITE AN EPISTLE ON WHY THEY DIDM'T TAKE 5 SECONDS TO LEAVE FEEDBACK. TIME MANAGEMENT?? I THINK NOT.

2. THE WORST REASON FROM A SELLER IS I ONLY LEAVE FEEDBACK AFTER THE BUYER LEAVES ME FEEDBACK. BOY THAT ONE REALLY RANKLES ME AS THAT IS NOTHING MORE THAN BLACKMAIL AND TELLS ME THAT THE SELLER IS NOT REALLY CONFIDENT IN EITHER THIER PRODUCT OR PACKAGING.
IN EITHER CASE THEY ARE SIMPLY SOLVED PROBLEMS. THEY GO ON THE DO NOT PURCHASE FROM LIST SO THAT THEY CAN MANAGE THIER TIME MORE EFFECTIVELY AND WON'T HAVE SO MUCH BUSINESS TO WORRY ABOUT OR PEOPLE TO BLACKMAIL. NOW I'LL RELINQUISH THE SOAP BOX.....REGARDS BROOKS

you know me - no offense intended!

I liked Julie's post subject: "...Gaynor; pornography"

I know Julie's very witty, but I'm not sure Scott would get the humor! BTW, I asked Scott Gaynor why he didn't leave feedback or answer emails and he was very apologetic and left several feedbacks for me. Seems like a very decent, but busy guy.

The reason I do not leave feedback as a seller until the buyer has left feedback is becuase I learned the hard way that leaving a postive right away leaves you no recourse when the buyer then claims you sold a bogus item and they then leave you negative or neutral feedback. No one should be leaving feedback until the deal is completed and each satisfactorily or worse case, you leave negative/nuetral feedback when you cannot resolve the issues at hand.

Buyers should always be the first to leave feedback since the sale is never complete until the customer happy. I do not have a problem leaving feedback first as a customer and is first thing I do when I get my items. I am also a pain in teh ass to sellers to do not leave feedback. One thing you can do, which I ahve done is on a repeat buy, left the nuetral feedback on the guy for not leaving me any feedback the first time around. Simply left feedback saying "no feedback left on previous sale, no reason given for not leaving any". You bet I got postive feedback that time

If you are like me and have no fear leaving neutral/negative feedback, alwyas go back and see if they have added a response toy our feedback. It can even be done with postive feedback. You are allowed to respond to thier responses

Jay

If you are trying to make your customer happy, leave feedback as soon as you get paid. Knock on wood, but I always do this and I haven't been screwed yet.

I disagree with Jay, also. As a buyer, if I've made my payment on time, then the seller should be leaving the feedback. When I get the item and it is satisfactory then I should be leaving positive feedback at that time for the seller. If the seller wants to send me the item before I pay, I will be happy to leave the feedback first (when I received the item) and (s)he can leave me feedback later, after I have mailed payment.

If you'd read the post, you would see that Gaynor and pornography had nothing to do with each other.

Humph! :p

I have learned as a seller to not leave feedback until I have notification of shipment received. I use the feedback as confirmation of delivery and the same reason my brother gave that the buyer is so sort of crazy.

I will have to say Scott I was going to start the same thread, because I get discouraged with these people that can't do a simple thing like leave feedback. You can probably almost always bet they check feedback, why can't they leave it.

i think my percentage is below 80%.

Still raising money for down payment on my new house, check out my auctions!!!!! Shameless plug

As a customer I use the seller's feedback to confirm that they received payment.

The key thing is, as a seller, doing everything you can to make your customer happy. I think of the things that tik me off as a customer, and avoid them as a seller.

Sad to say, I am generally lazy and forgetful about feedback. The favor is often returned .

Two things I've noticed about the sanity and reliability of ebayers:

1. The higher price the item, the more likely the buyer is to be sane & agreeable.

2. The older the card, the more likely the buyer is sane. (Same goes with recorded music, incidentally.)

On the few occasions where I've listed a bunch of $5-$10 current stuff, 1/100 buyers or so freaks out for no reason. I often never know why. This is not to say that I would leave negative feedback as retaliation, but if someone becomes irrational about something beyond your control, they did not hold up their end of the bargain. If you know you've shipped the card, described accurately, etc., then the rest of the ebay community deserves a warning that this person is not an ideal buyer.

My point (if I do indeed have one) is that we, as pre-1950 sellers (often of expensive stuff), we get to deal with generally reliable people. Many of whom are on this board. But it is unrealistic to generalize from from this sample.

I don't expect feedback till I've left some. I mean, my feedback is part of his experience as a seller.

As you can imagine with my big mouth, I sometimes offend sellers. Like saying original picture of Moe berg showed him with "greasy kids stuff in his hair. It's perfect!" Didn't get any feedback on that one...

As a seller, I always leave feedback when I'm sending the item out. Unless you're a seller that overgrades or sits on the item for a month after receiving payment, I can find no valid reason for not leaving feedback first. The arguement that it leaves you without any recourse is a poor one. If I as a buyer received a p/f card card that you described as nm and you cop an attitude with me when I try and return it, I shouldn't be afraid of receiving a retaliatory negative after I leave one. I've done my job as a buyer if I've got my payment to you in a timely manner. I don't deserve to have my feedback held hostage. If you're doing your job as seller, the "nut job" negatives should be few and far between. In those rare cases, ebay does provide a means for you to respond.

I've received 4240 feedbacks and left 6456 comments. First one I've left dates back to 4/96. That's ROUGHLY a 66% return rate on feedback. I think as the more you get the more you don't care if you get positive feedback. I always leave feedback for the buyer when I ship the item and hope for feedback when they receive it.

Scott, instead of leaving feedback, you can do like many sellers and let the customer know that you got the check and the package is in the mail. Customer is still happy still have not left feedback leaving you an you an opening if the deal goes bad.

as you point out there are unscrupulous sellers out there. By the same token, there are also unscrupulous buyers out there. I know, I've dealt with several. As a seller, I will never leave feedback until I know the buyer is happy with deal or that we agree to disagree.

Leaving negative feedback is not a 'retaliatory' thing for me. It means that something went very wrong with the deal. It is how the system is supposed to work. Sadly, most people fear retaliatory negs and thus will not leave negs or nuetral feedback
