Default T210 Suggestions

For the past several years I have been almost exclusively an Old Judge collector, but most of the players for whom I am now looking surface very infrequently and I don't like not being able to scratch an itch for that long!

I'm thinking of dabbling in the T210 set because I am more attracted to cards that have pictures on them as opposed to drawings, but I am woefully uneducated on the T210 set. I have a whopping 1 in my collection.

I'm not sure I'd jump right in and start to do an entire series (I like some of the crazy poses, so I could get my feet wet with them), but is it safe to say that the series get harder to complete as the number increases? If not, how would you rank the series by scarcity?

Hi.....Your numeric correlation is basically correct. I find 1, 2, and three to be plentiful. 4 has been tough. Five seems to break the streak as, for me it has been easier, akin to the first three. 6, 7 & 8 are tougher, with 7 being ever so slightly easier than the other two. So speaks one collector in Florida......

However you chose to go about it, unless you are prepared for a slow slog with lots of down time, a looser level of acceptability is in order. The Red Borders chip easily........ Good luck....I have been chasing it since the T206 dried up for me over a year ago. I have reached 140.......

Thanks, Mike. I'm hoping that the down periods and conditions are at least a little better than the ones I'm currently experiencing with the N172s.

My "non-set collector" self agrees with this. I have BST'd different series and try to watch them, as many do. You could try one of each to start with? And I have to agree, the poses on the T210s are great.

I have at least one from each series, but the most from the first three series. I think half of my 65 or so T210s may be from series 1 and 2. I got them all 15+ years ago, most in several big lots.

As much as I'd love to have both of those (who am I kidding - even one of those), they are way beyond the means of mortal men.

Yes, the same way the average Joe considers the Monster to top out at 518...

Hi Kevin! My sense is that the first three series are by far the easiest(although they each have some scarce cards), and the last three are the toughest. Series 4 is scarcer than series 5, although series 5 has some real toughies. Amongst the last three series there is not a lot of difference. Lew Lipset once told me that he thought that cards from series 7 are the toughest and, gun to my head, I probably agree. Series 8 is tough and has a lot of cards. Series 6 has some real rarities and is very popular.

To stick with a sliver of the Old Judge theme of your collection you could go for Series 5 including Lave Cross who is the only T210 Player who has a N172 issued as well.

Excellent suggestion (as far as the Cross goes for now)!

Default Collecting Themes

Kevin,
A lot of folks like the collect "local" aspect of the set. Perhaps there is a team within the eight series that is where you are from, or born, etc. I live in Tennessee, so naturally I leaned that way with Nashville, Chattanooga, & Memphis, but I was born in Ky and have roots there so the Blue Grass League interest me a lot in from Series 6... There are so many different ways to collect this set. If you like printing freaks, then Series 3 has the OB-20. Hard to find in Orange border, but even harder to find in Red border imho. Collect them by pose, catcher gear, portrait, in action, and so on. I started with collecting 1 from every team in every series. A lot of fun and I could pick out the poses that suited my interest.

As for toughness, I generally agree with aforementioned posts on scarcity. What I have found though from collecting these the better part of 2 decades is Series 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8 have players that are tough to find. It seems that there are pockets of rarity that you can only find by collecting them over time. There is no consistency.... Especially series 4, 7 and 8. Its a fun set to collect and you can collect very casually. Don't get in a rush and enjoy the True Monster.

Jeremy--Aren't there some cards that come with and without the glossy coating?

Are you speaking of an error in the gloss being left off, Jay, or are you saying some were correctly made that way? And all of those specific ones don't have gloss as intended?
