Default Egads Egan

Whenever the subject of the T206 Egan being unpleasant to look at comes up, I always have to trot out this D381 card. He was not a very attractive gentleman, and I believe the T206 artisians did a fine job making him look presentable.

No. I have always disliked some of the Minor League portraits, especially what I have always referred to in my head as the 'oval heads'. Will have to get back with a list of suspects.

Time to keep a tally and see who is the worst card in the set. Frank I apologize in advance for stealing your idea but this is all in good fun. Hope you understand.j

This is the grammar problem I've had all my life: I've always thought it was dealt with sternly.
However, when it's stated:

I'm pretty shocked at how little traction my suggestion of Bill Burns has gotten as he is easily the dorkiest looking card in the set. I can only think this is the case because I didn't post a picture to begin with. No way is Billy "Tiny Legs" Purtell worse than this atrocity! IMO this should rival Shannon and Egan for the ignominious honor...

Yes the Burns is pretty damn ugly but alas it is a Sox card so I'm forced to almost like it.

You know, to me his Turkey Red looks like his glove has 6 fingers on it. Anyone else notice that?

My vote goes to Carleton Molesworth. He couldn't look less interested. Looks like a weekend beer leaguer after a particularly tough night.

Plus, with the name, he sounds like he should be a butler on Downton Abbey.

"I do say, Molesworth, it has come to my attention that you've taken to raiding the larder before retiring each evening. Ease up, as the indulgence is going to your waistline".

you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,

I have to strongly disagree. How can a photograph of somebody not look like them? Regardless of whether or not it looks like him, is the card unappealing? That's the question being asked. I think the Johnson T206 portrait is one of the most beautiful cards ever made.

This card was released in 1909. Johnson started his career in 1907. When this card was in circulation in tobacco packs, Johnson was 20 years old, with a 19-23 career record. He wasn't even a star yet, and had 398 of his wins ahead of him yet.

The vast majority of pictures I've seen of the Big Train represent him later in his career. Well, this card portrays Johnson when he was still a kid, really. He's not going to look like a grizzled veteran at twenty years old.

Here's a tobacco ad of Johnson circa 1915. It is much closer in resemblance to the Johnson portrayed on his portrait card.

Oh my God, Raymond. LOL. When I saw this topic, the card I immediately thought of was Burchell, and my first thought was "he's awfully doughy. He looks like he's made out of marshmallow, like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man!

"Subcreatures! Gozer the Gozerian, Gozer the Destructor, Volguus Zildrohar, The Traveller has come. Choose and perish!!!"

"The choice is made. The Traveler has come!"

You hit it on the head. Put me down for Mr. Stay Puft, Fred Burchell.

Mr. Lennox has been added to the list.

I agree Bill that was a hilarious observation about Burchell very clever and funny.

Sorry for not getting back to you before now, but how many profile photos of Walter Johnson have you seen?

I can't recall any. You are probably right, I'd just like to see some proof, before Walter displaces any of the other uglies.

I vote for Egan, but ... the fact that Burns is shown wearing the wrong glove on the wrong hand makes it hard not to vote for that one.

Kidding...I'm just a little biased because I'm doing a back run for Admiral Schlei (catching).

How can it be the wrong glove on the wrong hand? It's either the incorrect glove on the correct hand, or the correct glove on the incorrect hand. No?

The ugliest T206 card still trumps about 99.9% of the cards made today.

Agreed they're too boring today. And they've run out of original ideas hence all the throwback cards made to look like older cards.

Shannon. He was dead and mummified for 200 years before being posed for that card.

And why did they dislocate his shoulder while posing him??
