The end is near! Hal just bid $13,000 on a Josh Gibson commemorative card. Say it aint so.
Sorry, I couldn't compose myself. I'm a long time lurker in the Network 54 website. I find the posts that you guys put up and chat about to be the most interesting, imformative, and above everything else, the funniest, involving pre-war cards. I never felt the need to jump in and match wits or share knowledge with you guys before, mostly because I felt over matched. However, when I saw Hal as the high bidder on a 50-51 Toleteros Joshua Gibson card that's currently on Ebay, I had to find out what is going on. Hal have you changed your stance on this card? Please, let us know. I hope you win it cause it would make a great addition to your already unbelievable collection of HOFame rookie cards. Personally I believe that Gibson was an awesome and very underated ball player. It would be great if there existed a card of him during his playing days. To my knowledge, and in speaking with Ryan Christoff who is a Negro League expert, and who found the first Gibson Toleteros cards, there have not been any cards found, of Josh Gibson during his playing days. Thus making this his first and best card.
Good luck Hal!

I beleive that Hal is merely trying to protect his investment. He even calls it a RC now too. http://www.lewisbaseballcards.com/handler.cfm?event=cardDetails&cardID=1166
I am glad he changed his mind about this card.

Dadblasted Reserve must have been sky high!

Hopefully they will put the card back up for auction WITHOUT a reserve so that everyone can get a fair crack at it!!!

Anyone who wants to bid $30,001 would sure beat me.

I suspect that some people would have done so in the last auction if the reserve had not scared them off.

If nobody does and I win the card for less...

then I guess I'll have an extra one to hold onto for a while.

Is it just me or does the image on the card look like a little boy wearing a white skirt?

It really does look like a skirt.

Don't you remember Gibson from "A League of Their Own"??

There can be substantial difference in color tone from card to card in this set. The Gibson in particular can vary quite a bit.

Notice in the scan below, the color on the left image is good, but the one on the right makes him look jaundiced it's so yellow and faded. The one on ebay is even worse than the one with the tape stain so maybe that was a factor in the reserve not being met.

Quite a difference in contrast in the two examples. I find the tape stain to be more distracting though.

Whatta you know?

Hal I am curious why you would want a second one of these cards when you never wanted a first. I would love to have a fair crack at this card.

Either Hal prefers this one to his existing one because it is nicer, or he is simply protecting his investment by making sure it doesn't go too cheap. I assume it is the former, as I doubt Hal would deliberately try to keep others from acquiring the card at a competitive price.
