National 2016 pickups

Thought I'd start a separate thread on 2016 national pickups. Let's see what cool stuff you grabbed. Here is the card I bought this morning. First table I wallked up to. Nothing that was even on the radar screen. Sometimes you have today wtf.....

I went down to AC yesterday without having a current wantlist* and thinking I might end up getting nothing. But then I saw this. It's triple signed (it has an endorsement on the back) which doesn't really matter to me, but I guess is a good thing.

It's now the only autograph in my collection aside from a couple of cards I like that happen to be signed. As a Mets fan for 40+ years the Kiner's Korner Inc. (Kiner's Korner was the postgame show after Mets TV broadcasts) and Shea Stadium address were the key features. I know he must have signed a lot of checks and I'm sure it's not rare, but it's one of those things where I would be thinking "I liked that and should have gotten it" if I hadn't picked it up. So, a good impulse buy, I guess.

* Except for a Diamond Stars Ducky Medwick ... the last DS HOFer I need. I asked a good number of dealers, including some with huge databased inventories, but I remain Ducky-less.

Kiner's Corner. I would have bought that in a heartbeat. I grabbed this bizarre piece of Mets history. Frank Cashin letter about George Foster. Don't think it panned out quite so well for my Metsies.

I have a number of Ralph Kiner checks including a Kiner's Korner. I don't think that they are that rare, but definitely cool.

I wasn't planning on going but I made a last minute decision to drive down
yesterday and I'm glad I did. I had a great time chatting with Jantz
and Chris B (atx840) and briefly with Adam G (Gradedcardman) and Jamie
(Blunder19).

I picked up a Mullin PD350 and a Baker PD factory 42 for a good price.
I also found a Dygert I was looking for with an odd print mark that is
also found on a few Ganzel and Brains.

I'm thrilled to add this to the back run for this Jennings pose that I recently began working on. It also serves as my type card (in lieu of Schaefer). I love it when a card serves two collecting focuses.

Here is what I picked up. I finally finished my t206 highlanders set!

I got into AC right before the preview on Wednesday afternoon and didn't really buy anything that night. Took a while for the wheels to start turning, but was beyond pleased with these pickups.
Was back home by late Friday evening, which was probably a good thing for my sanity and wallet.

The beauty of the T-227 Cobb really caught my interest at a show a few years back and got me back into collecting again. It's been my personal white whale ever since. Finding this one was incredibly satisfying.

A few other odds and ends -- '67 Venezuelan Cobb, '40 PB Williams, a few T206's, and worked on finishing up a '56 Topps set, but these Pre-War Cobbs were the highlights by far.
Wasn't sure how AC would go, but sounds like the Dealers and Collectors were both pleasantly surprised from what I overheard.

Finally got my signed Peckinpaugh OBAK out of that awful Beckett holder - which is intolerable to look at cards through - and into a beautiful SGC holder, which looks and scans so beautifully. Also, got a pretty sweet deal on this PSA 5 Brown portrait, which I've always adored. Finally, I also picked up 34 other T206s to bring my Monster number to 487 and climbing! Really great show - but maybe I'm biased because it's my first National!

Nice. I love that Cobb. I think the T227 is right up there with the greatest T sets ever. Such a beautiful card.

I know what you mean about T227 white whales. The T227 Jack Johnson is mine.

These were my two pick ups from the National. A nice Oscar Rookie and a very new to me boxing strip from 1930 w/ Max Schmeling, Joe Louis and Jim Braddock. It was too unique for me to pass up.

This was my first national. I was able to pick up two of the big ticket items on my want list. T206 Cy Young, grade 3 (piedmont) and T206 Walter Johnson, grade 2 (old mill).

Had such a great show. A pleasure meeting Chris Browne and other net54 members. Thank you all for a wonderful experience. By the way, if anyone saw Artie Lange at the Borgata on Friday, my sides were hurting for a full hour an a half.

Successful in adding to my backs, adding to my Schlei (catching) back run, and found this sweet crop mark too!

I had a great time at National -- several pickups, including these. The Radbourn has even better contrast than I can seem to get on the scan, so I'm pretty excited about this one.

I was fortunate to hang out with a number of Net54 members -- I'm afraid I might forget someone if I try to list everyone, but suffice to say, hanging out really makes the show that much more enjoyable!

Lotsa very nice pickups in this thread! Steve, I'm sure that Leon will instantly recognize your T216 Va. Extra pickup.

Condition-wise & budget-wise, this T330-2 (thanks to Chris Buckler) and this PM6 (thanks to Hank Thomas) fit nicely into my WaJo collection. And, thanks to Vic Stanley for these 1948-50 Safe-T-Cards, an obscure Washington, DC, area issue.

Yeah, I know. Was actually one of the cheaper ones that I found. And it was in the grade that I wanted. I collect cards for the card, not the grade. I just think it's awesome to own a piece of history like this. I don't need 4 razor sharp corners to enjoy the beauty of it.

Agreed. It's a great card. No knock on the card at all. It's the dealers pricing strategies at card shows, and especially at the National, that has me shaking my head.

Yeah, I know! It's the same way at vintage toy shows.....sometimes it's more like a museum. But always fun to go. treat grabs everyone!

I tried to sell a guy at the National an OJ proof for a reasonable price of $850. He said to me, his exact words, "That's a pretty steep price. I think I have mine marked for that too." I look over at his case and say, "The sticker on yours says $1,750. That's twice as much as what I'm asking."

That pretty much sums up my experience trying to buy and sell at the National but I still had fun walking around. Took me 2.5 hours by bus from NYC. If I had traveled any further I might have been disappointed.

And when I quickly looked at your scan, I was thinking "What SGC holder, they're both red?" Had to do a double take to see that one is indeed an SGC holder. Why would they go red when PSA has been red all along? Don't see the business logic of this, unless they want people to think what they are grading by PSA, in which case, why not just go to PSA?

I noticed a KSA on E-Bay a couple weeks ago that also looked very similar to PSA.

"Imitation is the greatest form of flattery" they say, or "if you can't beat them, join them" comes to mind also.

Truly had a wonderful time at the National this year. Meeting & talking with other Net54 members everyday was the highlight of the show for me.

SGC autograph authenticated cases have always been red. There is no conspiracy.

It simply means they have authenticated the signature and it is not just a card grade.

Its extremely important to have the separate colors as people were scamming buyers with PSA authentic grades with fake sigs for years. They would put a fake sig on a real card and ask for an auth grade. Unknowledgable buyers would think the auth grade meant the sig was real, when it really just meant it was a real card with a fake sig. Anyone buying an auth card without a flip designating the sig as well is a rube.

PSA is also notorious for slabbing cards with grades with fake sigs. They will tell you that they only were paid to grade the card and not the sig so the guarantee for the sig falls on the manufacturer. Here is an example of a fake sig

The best part of that excuse is that it's a fake card as well, but that's psa for you. The only thing real about this is the mistake psa made putting it in a case.

This was my only purchase an Al Downing 1968 Bazooka Box aside from3 auto's for my 500 HR ball. I looked at the a couple OJ HOF's but all were out of the range of my pocket. Still this one purchase at a VERY reasonable price made my show..

SGC authenticated signed cards featured the same style flip as the normal grading service for almost a decade and the red flip has barely been around two years. They began authenticating w/JSA in 2004-2005 and used the top two styles during that time frame. The partnership dissolved in 2012 and JSA aligned with Beckett. In 2013 SGC announced their own authentication service and in 2014 rebranded with the red auto flip (when they changed the regular flip style and collectors rioted.)

Personally I hate the Red the flips... A fair chunk of my signed 58 set is in old green flips and I'd love to be able to collect it that way. I love SGC but the red with the gaskets looks ugly IMO.
