Default Most affordable Dizzy Dean?

Would someday like to own a card of Dizzy from his playing career. What I never realized till I looked was that he was so much pricier than guys I would have assumed comparable like Hubbell.

Is there a particular Dizzy Dean that you think meets these four conditions...

1. Playing career
2. Dizzy only (vs 4-in-1)
3. Fits in standard top loader
4. Significantly cheaper than 1934 Goudey, assuming similar condition

Am guessing NO, but happy to be surprised!

Default Yes........

Your parameters are not very easily obtained but there are some:

1934 Batter Up Dizzy Dean #64
1935 Schutter-Johnson Dizzy Dean #31
1935 Schutter-Johnson Dizzy Dean #35

53163.jpg
70625.jpg
5947464.jpg

Not sure why you noted 1934 Goudey when he is in the 1933 Goudey set but I compared it to the card you listed:

1934 Goudey PSA 4 averages around $315

1934 Batter Up Dizzy Dean #64 last sold in PSA 4 $180
1935 Schutter-Johnson Dizzy Dean #31 last sold in PSA 4 for $162
1935 Schutter-Johnson Dizzy Dean #35 last sold in PSA 4 for $185

That is really about it. There are a few other cards of his that meet most of your standards EXCEPT low price so I did not list them.

Good luck!

Peace, Mike

Note that Paul Dean was his brother Daffy. Dizzy was Jay Hanna.

Default Chicle This

a 1939 National Chicle Premium (R311)

I picked this up for less than $20, but unfortunately it is too large for your size criteria.

Yep. Will most likely need to resign myself to the 33 or 34 Goudey then. Normally aim for around G-VG but may lower my standards here to make it work.

Am open to it still, but Standard Catalog, 5ed, shows Batter Up as $225 in VG vs $190 for the Goudey.

I think in the real world the Batter Up is much cheaper but maybe not.

Will be on the lookout when the time comes. Need about 25 more guys for my collection, and will go after the 22 cheap ones before biting thr bullet on Dean, Gehrig, and Ruth.

A nice vg/vg+ Tattoo Orbit should be in the vicinity of $250-300. Nice Dean card, too.

If you're patient, I would think you could find a Batter-Up for less than the cost of a '34 Goudey. I've seen quite a few in the $150 range in decent shape, and one without a top will likely cost less than half that. I collect Batter-Ups, and I actually prefer them without their tops. I've picked up Hall of Famers without tops for as little as $10 each. Three more issues that don't fit your dimensions, but your budget, are the '35 Gold Medal Flour, '39 Exhibit card and the '39 Cubs picture pack photo. And best bargain, though, is an Exhibit 4-in-1 "single," which is simply a 4-and-1 that's been cut apart.

Good call on a topless Batter Up or 1/4th of an Exhibit. I would consider either. Too bad the Gold Medal is too big for me...is my favorite by far but wouldn't fit in my display.

I got this pretty cheap (~ $30) a few years ago. It fits in a standard 4-screw case.

Like Ken I would saw to consider the Diamond Matchbooks. I just got mine for under $30.

I am envious of Frank acquiring a R311 for $20. I haven't been able to find one for twice that and have been looking.
