How in the world does this character know if this card would grade a 1 if one-third of the stock is missing on the card? If he guarantees the card is authentic, he should have had it graded & not by PRO.

What would be a reasonable price for a genuine '52 Topps Mantle in that condition?

In his description he says: "low starting bid with no reserve!!" but the auction says: "Reserve Not Met."

Not dealing with a rocket surgeon here... or are we????

I don't know and I may be a little "snooty" standards, but I'd rather not own a card that looks like that. With the exception of T206 Honus.

I am a beater fan...and I could see no possible use for that card at any price even if it was real...you guys have seen my T205 Joss, so you know my standards are pretty low.

I completely agree with bbcard1.

I'm not sure what kind of joy or value a real collector could derive from a card that is that tattered. Seriously, wouldn't it be a better investment to buy a Topps or Bowman Mantle card from the 1960s that actually shows a full photo? The whole auction seems kind of sketchy, and I'm surprised that people are putting good money into something like this.

Just curious, has anyone on Net54Baseball ever reported these fake cards to eBay by clicking the "Report a Problem" link? If so, what does eBay do? Perhaps eBay shouldn't get into the business of trying to sort out reprints from original vintage cards. After all, the responsibility lies with the buyer. I'm just curious, since I am seeing more and more eBay auctions where the seller includes a slightly off-focused scan of a vintage card that if authentic would be worth quite a tidy sum, and lists it with some sort of wild and/or carefully worded vague suggestion that the card is very likely authentic, but "I'm not an expert. Judge for yourself." I always ask myself, if it is too good to be true, and if it were really authentic, then why didn't the seller spend the $20-50 to get it authenticated and slabbed?

What do you guys think?

Thanks, as always.

Default reporting

Ebay doesn't do anything. I have reported many of these items. I get an email from "safe harbor" thanking me for my report, but nothing ever happens.

I report some of this crap also and nothing usually happens. Why? Because eBay makes too much money off of the scam artists and the suckers they steal money from.

Go and look at the number of fake cards that miami3kings sells on eBay. Then start adding the listing fees and the 9% Final Value fees together. Then heap on top of that the PayPal Fees and you can see that eBay makes a decent chunk of change off fakes/reprints/reproductions. Why would management want to give that up? With those fees, eBay's profit goes up and the managements' stock value goes up.

Of course, this is all soooooo short sighted on eBay's management part. That is because when people get burned too often they quit buying (like people on this board who stopped buying on eBay and started buying on the B/S/T list or just started saving their money for the big auction houses). So yes, not policing this fake crap is helping eBay now but it is ultimately going to hurt them in the future. Like when baseball cards on eBay is lumped in with cards that are offered on Craig's List or stuff from Coach's Corner.

I just went and looked at miamis3kings sales for the past 15 days and here is the awful truth; during that time period, he sold 29 FAKE cards for a total of $700.29 dollars.

So, only counting Final Value Fees and not Listing Fees or any PayPal Fees, eBay made $63.03 dollars of this ONE seller over the past 15 days ($700.29 X 9%).

Do you REALLY think eBay management gives a rats arse about fake cards when they are pulling in that type of money from just one seller over that short a time period? I don't. I think they are sitting in their vacation beach houses thinking about how they are going to spend some of that stock profit on redecorating.

The reporting must have worked because the card is gone.

If eBay would combat fraud, eliminate waste, and cut fees, revenues would climb so fast their heads would spin.

It reminds me of another entity with the same problem...

I get the feeling that sometimes ebay pays attention to what is said on this board.I may be wrong, but it seems like when members "out" cards on the board , they vanish from ebay (sometimes ).
