Default Play Deadball Era baseball

Posted By: jay behrens

I just recently picked up a great baseball game for the computer call Diamond Mind Baseball. This is not a 'twitch' game with modern graphic. This is a strategy based game where you manage the team and make all the strategic decisions. The game comes with 12 all time great teams, but you buy past season disks or, download other seaons online from other players. There is a site where you can download every season from 1871-1890. After that, it is hit and miss from 1891-1920. The 1894 season is there. I am currently playing the 1887 season and managing the Detroit team.

The game plays like APBA and Stratomatic where the player performance is based on real life stats. The only graphics are an accurate rendition of the ball park you are playing in. It also take into account weather.

The thing that really appeals to me is that you can treat it like a roto league and get a bunch of friends together and draft your own teams to play against each other on-line. The game keeps track of all the stats, so there is no book keeping on your part. And if you don't ahve enough people for a full league, the computer draft the other teams and play those teams. You can also play year to year and it factors in aging and retirement.

The very first game I played was the 1971 Pirates v 1969 Mets. Steve Blass had a no hitter thru 8 innings and Seaver lost he game on a 2 hitter. The other cool thing about the game is that you can have the computer play a whole season and see how it would turn out.

All in all, a very cool game. If you want to check it out, here is the link http://www.diamond-mind.com/index.html

Jay
