E90-1 Jerry Upp. Is it a rarity? Or is it cuz his butt went outside of the frame? hee hee. Went for over $500 in fair condition.

ebay item #220182060230

Thanks,
Rob

It is by far one of the toughest cards from the E90-1 set. Perhaps not the absolute toughest, but definitely in the top 5 or 10....and that is a set that is pretty easy to put 80% together, but the path to completion can be a long, arduous and expensive task.

It is a difficult E90-1... there are several more difficult, but this one is not a common, as mentioned above.

And, Jerry Upp is a bit of an obscure player, in 1909 he won 2 games and lost 1 for Cleveland, appearing in 7 games, starting 4, completing 2. The lefty had a 1.69 ERA. And that was his only year in the majors. This is his only card.

I'm literally laughing out loud because I just sent tbob an e-mail asking the same question. I didn't want to post the question on the board because I was the underbidder and didn't know whether the winner is a board member I (and the fact I cost him some money). I knew the Upp was tougher than a common, but I figured it was a case of two people who wanted a card badly each putting in a high bid, figuring he'd be covered.

Thanks for the info guys! Still surprises me how healthy a rarity of a common player can go for!

Rob, I think you cost him (if I'm reading the bid history correctly) around $400 ... since the 3rd highest bid was like $134. If he's a board member, I'm sure we'll be hearing from him, hee hee.

Rob

Yep, your math is spot-on, which is why I hesitated to post about the auction. Though I feel a tad guilty, I've been on the other end of that scenario too many times to count.

On my very first post on this board (after a very long time off from collecting) I posted about a dozen scans of my beater E90-1s. I got a lot of emails asking if the Upp, with the hole in the center, was for sale.

It is likely that more bids were placed but did not go through because they were not high enough. Happens to me all the time but you would never know it from looking at the bid history.

The good news is that it is one less person you have to compete with when this card shows up again.

Good point about the bids not going through... I'm shaking my head. I'm aware when mine don't go through because of the snipesters out there. But I'd not thoguth it through to the point where that was happening to others. I'd think a few bids never registered for Upp.

And there is no shame in being the underbidder. Whoever won it should look in the mirror and complain, 'cause it was he that bid in that higher amount.

Well I'm not complaining, for sure! I had another one on ebay about a year and a half ago that if memory serves me correctly, also did rather well.

Some folks comment from time to time about Oakes' glove on his E90-1 card is above the frame line, as he jumps for a ball. Jerry Upp protrudes a bit beyond the border on his E90-1, too.

Here's my Upp card. In 1907 his 27 wins for the Columbus Senators was tops in the American Association.
