Default T205 All Hall of Fame Tobacco Brand Team

If you collect 1911 T205 Gold Borders then you probably know there are 11 different tobacco brand backs...American Beauty, Broad Leaf, Cycle, Drum, Hassan, Hindu, Honest Long Cut, Piedmont, Polar Bear, Sovereign and Sweet Caporal.

It is quite a feat for a T205 collector to assemble the subset of 11 backs for this set as the Drum and Hindu backs are extremely rare.

Well how about a T205 subset of 11 different Hall of Famers each with a different example of those 11 tobacco brand backs. When you consider there are only 3 confirmed T205 Hall of Famers with a Drum or Hindu back it would seem to be impossible.

The only confirmed T205 Hall of Famer with a Drum back is Mordecai Brown. The only 2 confirmed T205 Hall of Famers with Hindu backs are Hugh Duffy and Walter Johnson. I doubt the combined card total of all Brown Drum back (SGC pop 4, PSA pop ?), Johnson Hindu back (SGC pop 1, PSA pop ?) and Duffy Hindu back (as far as I know I have the only one confirmed to date) would be more than 20-25 cards.

So in order for someone else to assemble a T205 back subset of Hall of Famers they would currently need to have a Drum back of Brown AND a Hindu back of Johnson.

If we add to that the extra condition of assembling a complete position team of 9...with an extra pitcher and manager in order to fill out the 11 different brand backs...certainly that is not possible, right?

Well, I have that T205 subset...and it is very likely the only one that exists.

I present to you The T205 All Hall of Fame Tobacco Brand Team (8 position players, 2 pitchers and a manager) with each card representing an example of the 11 different tobacco brand backs.

Who should be the starting pitcher...Chief Bender or 3 Finger Brown?

Pretty impressive with the two tough backs.

I have a pretty cool extension to your project, if it is possible. I checked what the roster size for major league teams was when T205 cards were produced in 1911, and here is what I found out from the Baseball Almanac website:

1908: Both leagues set their roster size at 17 where it remained until the National Agreeement was modified after the 1912 season.

T205 cards were produced in a total of 17 backs, if you include the factories and different back colors.

I think you see where I am going with this...if it is a possibility to form a full 17 player HOF roster from the 25 different Hall of Famers seen in the T205 set, and you accept the challenge, good luck!

Brian

Brian

It doesn't appear possible with the info I have.

There are 25 Hall of Famers in the T205 set. I have 11 on my team all with different brand backs.

The other 14 Hall of Famers not currently on my team are:
Jimmy Collins
Johnny Evers
Clark Griffith
Miller Huggins
Hughie Jennings
Walter Johnson
Addie Joss
Rube Marquard
Christy Mathewson
John McGraw
Tris Speaker
Bobby Wallace
Ed Walsh
Cy Young

There are 17 different brand backs including the 6 variant tobacco brand backs. I have the 11 brands represented but not all the variants.

The variant backs not on my team are as follows:

American Beauty - black ink
Broad Leaf - green ink
Hassan - Factory 649
Piedmont - Factory 42
Sweet Caporal - Factory 25
Sweet Caporal - Factory 42 - black ink

Looking thru my T205 set revealed I have 2 more Hall of Famers I can add to my team with different backs:
Jimmy Collins - Hassan Factory 649

Cy Young - Sweet Caporal - Factory 42 - black ink

That leaves 4 more backs (17-11-2):
American Beauty - black ink
Broad Leaf - green ink
Piedmont - Factory 42
Sweet Caporal - Factory 25

I would need to add a card from the remaining pool of 12 Hall of Famers (25-11-2) with those 4 remaining backs:

Johnny Evers
Clark Griffith
Miller Huggins
Hughie Jennings
Walter Johnson
Addie Joss
Rube Marquard
Christy Mathewson
John McGraw
Tris Speaker
Bobby Wallace
Ed Walsh

Using the chart I have of possible players and back combinations shows these players and back possibilities of the 4 remaining backs for my team:

Johnny Evers - Piedmont 42
Clark Griffith - Sweet Cap - Fact. 25
Miller Huggins -
American Beauty - black
Broad Leaf - green
Hughie Jennings - Sweet Cap - Fact. 25
Walter Johnson - Sweet Cap - Fact. 25
Addie Joss - none of the 4 possible
Rube Marquard - Piedmont 42
Christy Mathewson - Piedmont 42
John McGraw - Piedmont 42
Tris Speaker - none of the 4 possible
Bobby Wallace - Piedmont 42
Ed Walsh - Piedmont 42

So it would appear I could add a Piedmont 42 and a Sweet Cap 25 Hall of Famer fairly easily but there does not appear to be a selection of American Beauty black ink or Broad Leaf green ink Hall of Famers.

Of the remaining 12 Hall of Famers in my pool, Joss and Speaker are not available in any of the 4 backs needed.

Of the remaining 10 players, 6 of them are only available in one of the missing backs...Piedmont 42

3 players are only available in Sweet Cap with Factory 25 back

So I believe it is possible to have a roster of 16 different Hall of Famers all with different backs but I don't think it is possible to fill out the roster for all 17 backs and different Hall of Fame players.

I don't have a HINDU to display. So, I will play a variation to this game, by displaying my near-complete run of Miller Huggins.

I say "near-complete" run, because I expect that Huggins' DRUM card will eventually be discovered. Otherwise, this run is "complete" for the time being.

My favorite T205 is Miller Huggins. He is the guy who persuaded Col. Jacob Ruppert (Yankees owner) to acquire Babe Ruth from Boston in 1919....and the rest is history.
