Default Pre 1900 Football

Hi-

I really enjoyed some of the threads recently showing early tickets and programs. I want this thread to show pre 1900 football items (ephemera, cards, memorabilia, etc.) I know this is the card forum but I wasn't sure if all of the members check the memorabilia forum as regularly so I figured I would post here.

To start, here are some Dartmouth magazines from 1876-77. The first one (October 19th 1876) talks about a "foot-ball" game that took place at the end of a two day sports competition. The second one (November 23rd 1876) announces that Princeton has sent a request to other schools to start an intercollegiate foot-ball association. The third one (April 12th 1877) has a line that Yale is not participating in the foot-ball association.

Please post your own early football items. I will post some stuff from the 1880s and 1890s later today.

Alan

Thanks for starting this thread, Alan! Most of my stuff I have I've already posted in the Ode to Pre-War Cardboard thread here:

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=201392

but will add to this thread as I get new stuff. Would love to see more 1800s items posted here!

I sold most of my pre-1900 material a year ago, but kept this photo of the Yale 1887 team with Harry Beecher holding the ball, Beecher's Football card, and a letter to Wm Church at Princeton in 1896 asking him if he wants to play pro ball.

Great items guys! I really like that letter. Here are two more items. The first item is a cigar label that is different from the one that was issued in that there are no letters on the sweaters. The second item is a cigar trade card that shows a version of football. I believe the trade card dates to the early 1880s and the cigar label item from the 1890s.
