Default A couple of questions about 1933 Goudey.

Posted By: Scott Jeter

I apologize in advance if these seem like stupid questions but, can anyone tell me if there is a reason the Goudey Company removed the "Big League Chewing Gum" strip from the front of the high number cards? Also, why does it seem that the Napolean (Larry) Lajoie #106 should be part of the Sports Kings set rather than the regular '33 Goudy set. It appears to be the only card in the regular set that has the action silhoutte reminiscent of the Sport Kings cards. If I remeber correctly, originally there was no card #106 and the Lajoie was produced in 1934 to complete the '33 set. Thanks for your help!!

Lajoie was printed with the 1934 set. The abckground is that of a 34 Goudey. Can't tell you why they did what they did with the 33 high numbers

If memory serves, the high numbers in 33 Goudey were repeat poses of cards already issued honoring the 1933 World Series. So they may have just decided to go with a slightly altered design.

After checking the scans at The Virtual Card Collection, I noticed that card #'s 97-99, 106-114, 121-129, 142, and 190-240 are all missing the "Big League Chewing Gum." I guess it's one of those interesting Hobby Oddities. Thanks for your help!!

http://www.network54.com/Forum/message?forumid=153652&messageid=1103331139 so it seems that the cards did not come out in numerical order.

Barry, I think you're thinking of Diamond Stars....the high numbers in Goudey are unique poses.

I was just reading up on this set in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. They indicate that there was another card #106 which was a Leo Durocher proof. Has anyone ever seen one of these? Are they more scarce thatn the Lajoie?

Thanks,
Scott

You're right about the poses, but weren't the players just repeated from the earlier series (Senators and Giants)? There was a definite World Series theme to the last few series.

Lefty O'Doul has two cards and McGraw had shipped him to the Dodgers by then. The second card has no red strip.

The last 11 cards are new poses of players from the Giants. The 12th last card (#229) is Floyd Vaughan of the Pirates. Weird since Goudeys were printed in sheets of 24.
