Default Buying a T-206 Ty Cobb w/Bat Off-Shoulder

Posted By: peter chao

Guys,

I have my eyes set on purchasing a Ty Cobb w/Bat Off-Shoulder in about a week. Are there any major condition problems that I should look out for. In other words, is centering often a problem. How about fading or off-color backgrounds are they common. Anything else I should pay attention to. Thank you in advance for your input.

Peter

Nothing unique to that card that Im aware of. I would suggest looking at closed auctions on ebay and determining for yourself what issues are common among the cards.

You could always come over to the dark side? I could tell you what to look for in this series?

Dave,

It's in PSA 4 condition. Leon, nice Cobb, the one I'm looking at is only in slightly better condition.

Chuck,

I like your Cobb, do you have any idea of how it was torn into two pieces.

Leon,

The stamp that says "COLLECT THEM" on the back of your card, do you think that PSA would label the card MK for being marked. But it's still a very nice card because there are no noticeable creases.

Guys,

Dealers must be making money in this market. I made a $50 deposit on the Cobb and asked the dealer to bring the Cobb to a local baseball card show.

I went to the show as scheduled and the dealer forgets the card. All I can say is that times must be good if you can let a chance for a $1,000 sale go by.

$1,000 for a PSA 4ish Cobb bat off is probably low right now. Dealer may have found a better sale maybe? Darn T206's keep going up up up.

I've been doing business with this dealer a long time...so I suppose the worst that can happen is that he will return my deposit...then I'll post an ad in B/S/T to buy.

Id have to agree. on vcp the last sgc40 Cobb bat off sold for 1275, it had a polar bear back but as far as i know it only adds a slight premium at the grade. Another SGC40 sold for over a grand in Huggins and Scott with a common back as well. And on ebay just recently a bat on SGC40 closed at 935.00 and another PSA 3 bat on sold for 1,075.
Hey Trae if your reading... your site lists the Cobb bat on shoulder with a 50.00 higher price then the Cobb bat off. But I've seen a lot of batt off out selling bat on Cobbs. And virtually all the sgc prices are higher with the bat off then the bat on at VCP (although i know its never a fair comparison due to card condition and date sold, etc) Anyways I was wondering what the reasoning behind that was? I've always liked the colors in the bat off better, but there both great cards. Back to being on point... i think the days of getting Cobb bat on or off cards in psa 4 for a grand are over!

The card dealer says the PSA 4 Cobb was sold, however, he recently purchased a PSA 3 Cobb with Bat Off Shoulder. He wants to know if I'm interested.

I suppose so, but I'm not sure what a reasonable price would be, any suggestions guys.

I've been dealing with this guy for several years and he's reasonable.

Marc,

I had discussed a $1000 for the PSA 4 Cobb with the dealer and we had a tentative agreement. So now he's only offering a PSA 3 Cobb, I should be tougher and offer only $750. Is that a pretty good plan.

that's a pretty lowball offer...I'd be offended if you already have a tentative deal for 1K.

Pete in Minnesota,

The $1000 was for the PSA 4 Cobb, but he already sold that. Now he's only offering a PSA 3 Cobb, so wouldn't $750 be a reasonable price.

if you can get it for $750, more power to you, as a nice-looking one would probably garner over $1,000 on Ebay

Thanks guys, I'll be meeting the dealer tomorrow, I'm going to see if he will take some cards in trade also.

Actually, making the deal is half the fun of collecting sometimes...

Peter, if you had a tentative deal for the PSA 4 than why did he sell the card to someone else? Obviously he was offered more than 1k for it. Unless the 3 is really a 2 in the wrong holder I don't think I'd hold my breath on getting it for $750 either. If he dealt to someone else once...

Dave,

That's a good point. Ordinarily, I would not try to complete this type of deal, but I know this guy pretty well so I'm confident that we can work something out this time.

The deal has been completed. Pretty fair overall. I paid $550 and threw in 1959 Bob Gibson (in VG, unslabbed) and 1953 Bowman Whitey Ford (in g, unslabbed).

The Cobb with Bat Off-Shoulder is in a PSA 3 holder but looks more like a PSA 2. Making the deal was a lot of fun, thanks for all the advice.
