Default How do you justify keeping dupes?

Over the past 2-3 years I have been focusing more on upgrading my Hank vintage cards to higher grades. I would then sell my dupe, as I didn't need it in a lower grade.

I had a thought recently to keep my dupes, especially in mid grades... If you keep dupes, how do you justify it? Trying to reason with myself.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian- that's the same method I use, though it seems I always end up getting far less I originally paid when moving the dups.

Default how do I justify keeping my dupes...lets see

That's easy! One for my team set, one for my player set, one for my type card set, and one for each miscellaneous other grouping I might be working on, plus trade bait or items for sale (that I may never actually sell). That's at least 5 right there. Also need to take into consideration whether there are different front/back combos, variations, or proofs known to exist, in which case you multiply each possible card by 5.

Any more than that and your just a hoarder.

The only card I hoard is from a local team so I just say it’s meant to be in Richmond lol.

Default Dupes Rule

I have never regretted having more than one of each card. If you dont then you have nothing to trade or if something goes up in value over time, you still cant benefit without selling your only copy if you dont have dupes. I also remember the time as a kid when I put my 1969 Mantles on the table and noticed.....HEY one of those has white letters instead of the yellow like the others! I kept the group together and felt vindicated years later when I finally re entered the hobby and discovered the White Letter variations were more valuable!

Default Because they are close in condition.....

As a general rule, I don't keep my dupes. There are just too many things I want to own that I can't justify it.....most of the time. Occasionally I have 2 cards that are just too nice - and tough to find that I just can't bring myself to sell either. That of course is not including variations as mentioned earlier - they (in my mind) are NOT dupes!

Default The Foolproof Method

If I am unable to sell a dupe, I keep it. Works every time.

Default Duplicates

As for vintage cards, every card is like a snowflake. No two of them are exactly the same condition, centering, color, registry, gloss, etc. If you like a card, why not own more than one of them? Wouldn't you rather have two 1841 PB Greenberg's than one Greenberg and a Camili, Donald, and Arnovich? (No offense to the Camili, Donald, or Arnovich collectors out there)

Both scenario's have similar value, but I would bet that you as a Greenberg collector would get more happiness out of the two Greenbergs.

As one reply mentioned, some people collect players, some collect sets, some collect teams, all of which can be put on a registry.

I think the PSA registry is missing one more important category: the single-card ladder. Why can't someone collect a single card in each grade from 1-10? That would be pretty cool to have as well.

Dupes? Trade bait. Or I usually sell to put into other cards I want more.
Don't know how to justify straight dupes unless you are going for a second, third etc.. set. Or if you want to just hoard, that is ok too. You don't have to justify it to us, we are similar.

"How do I justify keeping dupes?"

Simple. I don't tell my wife I have a dupe!

And let's keep it that way!

Cheers,

Pat- That reminds me of the time I did some serious measuring of some 1915 W-Unc cards to try to determine if the wider picture ones were a different series. In the end I thought they were just cropped differently but they were still the same approximate size. Sometimes we just need a lot of cards .

Default A duplicitous response

Here is how my extra cards remain within the fold...I dupe the dupes into believing they are part of my collection, thus in the process duping the dope that is me into believing they belong.

Every vintage card is slightly different and if it’s a card you love it’s great to have multiple “variations”. If you never look at them, then sell them...

It's super easy to justify. I like cards, some cards I like more than others, if I like a card a lot, I will keep multiple copies.

I get rid of dupes as fast as I can. Dont want any. Never understood the mentality of people who collect tons of the exact same card also.

Just hold on to them for a bit longer, they have been in an extended bear market since about 1991, which suggests they are long overdue for a rebound. Especially with investors seeking a safe haven for their capital in light of today's rapid currency fluctuations, erratic oil prices and uncertainty in the international trade system. 1989 Topps Gregg Jefferies are probably going to be seen as a safe asset, especially among large institutional investors, so hold on to them.

Why do you have to justify it?

The only exceptions I can think of, where you would need to justify it to yourself or someone else, are if space is at a premium, or if the duplicate is something you can get good money for and your financial situation is such that the money will be a big help.

Otherwise, if you like having duplicates, that's how you enjoy the hobby. Case closed.

I rarely do, but when I do it's simply because I enjoy owning both cards. Usually they're different grades so I have a high grade example as well as a lower grade version that I feel has excellent eye appeal for the grade. That's all the justification I need.

I rarely acquire dupes, but when I do it is a card that I believe to have a significant upside over time, and there is little point in selling it now.

Best wishes,
