Default 1922 Rogers Hornsby's Triple Crown

Here it is guys, the Baseball Encyclopedia is great because it allows you to ask great questions like was Hornsby's line stats of 42 hrs., 152 RBIs, and .401 the best hitting season ever for an infielder. If there was a better one, who was it and which year.

Here is Alex Rodriguez' current projection for 2007:

HR 122 RBI 314 BA .379

He set an American League record by hitting 10 HR in the first 14 games of the season.

Jimmie Foxx
HR 58 RBI 169 BA .364

Lou Gehrig
HR 47 RBI 175 BA .373

Larry,

We know that A-Rod isn't going to keep up this pace. Also, Lou Gehrig and Jimmy Foxx played first base, that is obviously an easier position to play than 2nd base. Hornsby's .401 is still better than either Gehrig or Foxx. Hornsby was also in the midst of winning 6 batting titles in a row.

I just love my Baseball Encyclopedia.

Peter

This is the greatest offensive season, period, and his 5 year stretch from 1921-5 is the best ever. he averaged over .400. Not even Cobb did that.

Its not quite up there with the years Gehrig and Foxx put up but Banks had a helluva '58 with .313 47 HR 129 RBI
Pujols played a good portion of games at 1st base(though played OF too) in 2003 with .359 43 HR 124 RBI. I dont think any infielders, or maybe anyone period is gonna touch Hornsby's 1922 stats!

In 1927, Lou Gehrig batted .373 with 52 doubles, 18 triples, 47 home runs, and 175 RBI's. That's not too shabby. He also had a 184 RBI season in 1931.

Barry,

I'm a great admirer of Lou Gehrig, not just a great ballplayer, but one of the classiest guys ever.

Still I'm sure that those great RBI seasons were aided by that super Yankee hitters he had around him.

RBI's are always the product of men getting on base, but what about the 117 extra base hits? That's a simply mind boggling total.

Barry,

Your right about Lou, in a different league or a different time, he would have been worshiped as a power-hitter.

Unfortunately, he was in the shadow of an icon, the Babe. People didn't realize how great Lou was until the end of his career. Baseball fans didn't realize how much they loved him until he gave his farewell speech at Yankee stadium.

I just got my copy of the SABR Baseball List & Record Book in the mail yesterday and it is fascinating to read --a quick look at just two catagories shows Rogers Hornsby as having the highest career batting average (.358) by a right-handed batter and the record for the highest career on base percentage by a right- handed batter (.434).

Hornsby had a five year stretch where he averaged .403! Nobody has come close to that, not even Cobb or Jackson.

1922 is the amazing year because he not only hit .400, he hit 40 HRs too. We will probably never see it in our lifetime, but Bonds sure tried to give it a run.

Hack Wilson had a pretty impressive year in 1930. 56HRs, 191RBIs and .356 AVE.

When did Hack Wilson become an infielder?

How about Ivan Dejesus and his 1981 Triple Crown of Thorns season? Keep in mind he qualified (403 ABs) in all three categories:

BA: .194
HR: 0
RBI: 13

Last in the league in all three!

Also, throw in 61 Ks for some extra perspective. Forget about offense, to have those kind of numbers and still be in the Majors says a lot about your glovework!

Sorry guys I guess I didn't read the question fully. Hack did play 2nd base for 5 games in 1933 though.

Give ARod 14 HR in 19 games now. Ties record for homers in April, and its only the 23rd!

Well guys, we mentioned a lot of great hitting infielders. The way A Rod is hitting now, he will surpass them all by a substantial margin.
