Default Babe Ruth Photo. Trying to identify who is standing next to Ruth

Picked up a "Sporting News Collection" photo of Ruth. Not sure who is standing next to him. Anyone know? Does not look like Joe McCarthy or Johnny Neun. It is stamped on the back: "Photo by Wm. C. Greene".

Not sure if it is April 1947 Babe Ruth Day or 1947 World Series. Either way, think that guy is the former owner of this wallet.

Default 1947 first ever Old Timers' Day

Thanks Dewey, did some searching on 1947. WS & Ruth day he was wearing his buttoned coat that he was often seen in. What he has on here is a very unusual coat for him. I had not found him wearing it except in my pic and now a couple from the 1947 first ever Old Timers' Day:

Now just need a 1947 Old Timers' Day roster to figure out which former Yankee it is.

It looks to me, that it could be George Selkirk.

He was at the 1947 Old Timers game.

Here are two pictures I found showing some of the players at the game:

Default 1947 Old Timers Lineup

Thanks Steve. Selkirk was in the lineup, but would have been only 39 (born in 1908) at the time of the game. The gentleman in the photo looks, at least to me, at least to be in his 50s. I also could not find any pics of him with glasses. It would seem he would regularly wear them if he was wearing them at this time.
Imagine getting autographs from this group:
The Yankees Lineup was: Frank Baker, Duffy Lewis, Wally Schang, Wally Pipp, Herb Pennock, Bob Meusel, Earle Combs, Waite Hoyt, Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing, Red Rolfe, George Selkirk, Roger Peckinpaugh, Buddy Hassett and Johnny Sturm managed by Joe McCarthy.

Connie Mack managed a squad of former All-Stars including Tris Speaker, Al Simmons, George Sisler, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Lefty Grove, Chief Bender, Cy Young, Ed Walsh and Ty Cobb.

I was concerned about that also.

I just base the idea on his ears and face generally matching up with the man in the photo, and the fact that he was at the game in 1947. Keep in mind also, that he probably served in WWII, and men did generally look older than their chronological age (at least what we're used to now) at the time.

I looked at photos of the other players id'd as being at the 1947 game, and couldn't find a good match with any of them.

Default Johnny Broaca?

While going through the lineup, Johnny Broaca image shows up. The glasses are not the same, but I believe it is him. Some 10 years later, probably would have different glasses. If so, why would he be on the field in uniform at the Old timer's game? Or for that, why any game after 1937 (last year with the Yankees)?

Sorry, but totally not Broaca. Nor Selkirk. Nor Danny MacFayden, George Toporcer, Chick Hafey, Lee Meadows,
or Carmen Hill. Wishing we had something positive to suggest instead of just negative. We're thinking, though,
he's not necessarily a guy who wore glasses during his playing days but needed specs only later...
Looking for a source that lists Yankee coaches in 1940s seasons...

edited to add: also not Art Fletcher.

Wikipedia lists coaches and managers for each team. Just type in "1947 New York Yankees", and you'll get the page. Scroll down, and you see a full roster for (supposedly), everyone who played for the team that year, along with the coaches and manager(s). There is also a link at the top right of each page, for the preceding and following years.

I just looked at the rosters for the 1945-47 teams, and didn't come up with any good choices for the man in the photo.

Not sure if you already have this info or if this helps, but there's a list of other players in uniform in the article from the NYT the next day.

Default Wally Schang with Babe Ruth

Thanks to everyone who helped figure out this great mystery. This was an interesting research project. I did not know anything about this game before this and to think about the players who were in this Old Timers game, such as, Frank Baker, Earle Combs, Tris Speaker, Jimmie Foxx, Chief Bender, Cy Young, Ed Walsh and Ty Cobb, well WOW.

I have been going through and posting my collection here (not really into selling, but I do trade): http://www.gladishsolutions.com/pressphotos/ There are some, such as this one, which did not have a tag. So trying to get place accurate information on it.

Default Old timer ID

That's Wally Schang. There are several group photos of the 1923 reunion. Shang can be seen in the front row wearing glasses or holding his glasses in his hand.
