Can someone please explain this auction to me..?

http://cgi.ebay.com/2003-04-Exquisite-Dwayne-Wade-Number-Pieces-3-3_W0QQitemZ200005960058QQihZ010QQcategoryZ73399QQr dZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Everytime I try and think about it, my brain shuts down.
A quick look at the bidders list shows buyers with loads of ebay experience.....

And to keep it sort-of on topic, what does it mean in a collecting sense, what is the buyer thinking, how does he compare the card to other cards, etc....because I'm just stone cold flummoxed!

If Michael Jordan's cards went down in value after he retired,
it would be foolish to think that lesser player's, who is at the
height of his popularity. will buck the trend.

Or, as my dad would say, "That's a lot of money." (Implying that
that would not be his choice of purchase).

I don't know much about basketball or basketball cards, but $18,000 and the reserve STILL isn't met?

What part don't you understand? The fact that 20 people bid more than $10K? The fact that the high bidder bid over $18K? Or the fact that THAT WASN'T ENOUGH TO MEET THE RESERVE?????!!!!!!!!

I've got some tulip bulbs to sell you -- only a million dollars each.

This shiney stuff is certainly far from my expertise, but there is money in that material, as we all know.

I believe the game is to get in to a card early in its cycle, flip it quickly - or at least before its peak. Because the drop off is fast and severe.

If you know what you are doing, I think that there may be good earning potential here, taking advantage of collectors who think that the item which they are buying has long term growth potential.

I offer no further value judgements on this.

I don't follow modern cards, but I would have thought a
$18,000+ card would be in a PSA/DNA or GAI/JSA holder,
if only for the autograph verification. As a seller, I would
think such holdering would only help sale. I understand the card was
issued with the signature, but even I would get a holder and/or
LOA for something I thought was worth over $18,000.

I like to call this type of thing "artificial rarity." A 3x5 index card with a Wade sig books for $20. If he misses a few freethrows, the value drops $5,000. Plus, it's an ugly thing. Nouveau riche money.

I'll mortgage my house today, gotta have that thing. Are these people nuts?! I mean, I know someone would say the same thing about me, and perhaps "us" as a whole due to some of our purchases, but...Wow! Pain medication kicking in, I think now i'll bid on it. Maybe that's the problem, bidders are all doped up.

I actually follow the newer stuff and I think this is another example of the Pope autograph of last year. People sense a ridiculously-high reserve and just bid for sport. There is no way this 3/3 is even close to worth that. There are plenty of Wade auto/game used out there, low-numbered, that don't even fetch close to that.

Although, at several-hundred $$$ per pack, who knows???

Cobby33,

Do you remember that Michael Jordan/ Lebron James Dual Logo Patch that sold for like 60k+ on Ebay about a year or so ago?

I thought that was absolutely outrageous.

I remember reading somewhere that said the card sold for 250k to a private collection.

Cards these days...

How much are the packs of this issue exactly?

...and I'd really be curious to see who's bidding. To spend $ on that type of card, you have to be totally oblivious to the vintage market don't you? Or else you know someone who's got even MORE money and you can sell it to them.

"If you know what you are doing, I think that there may be good earning potential here,"

IF you know what you're doing. Most people don't. And card companies want it that way. packs now go for upwards of $500. forget about how much a box costs. The modern market is all about gambling. At least the post speculative modern market is (like game used or autos of current superstars). People shell out big dollars to try to get cards like this. when they do get them, they flip them as quickly as possible.

Turner-
Yes, I do. Crazy, which is why this may be legit - but - Jordan has always fetched high $$$ and so has Lebron (so far). That was a 1/1 and this is 3/3 and of someone who is less popular than Jordan and Lebron...But who knows???

Bocca- The packs go in the $600 range.
