Default Educate me on the Old Judge 1886 Browns "Champions"

I don't own any OJ's, but now and then I get interested in them. I've seen a few of the 1886 Browns "champions" cards lately. The Comiskey seems like the same pose as the N28 Ginter.

Anyway, I'm just curious about this OJ subset. How many cards are there? Any impossible rarities or other interesting info about the subset?

Here is one. There are 13 different cards, with minor variations. This Kemler is also seen with an 1887 copyright. You can read more in Lipset's encyclopedia and/or the OJ book (The Photographic Baseball cards of Goodwin and Co.).

These are easy to find if you just want a common as a type. They are all portraits and like many OJ's it's more difficult to find them with sharp photos.

Thanks for the info. Is there a player checklist for the 13 cards? What are the variations?

Best thing you could do is buy the book on Old Judges that was written by three members of this board, Joe G., Jay and Richard. The book is pricey but worth every penny. It will give you endless hours of enjoyment and you'll learn all about the cards!

Awesome, thanks!

I'm guessing the variations are ones with Gypsy Queen. I saw one like that on ebay recently.
