Tris Speaker. In collecting cards I've always been surprised by the huge variations in his image caught in various baseball card issues. Some players like Ruth are readily recognizable in almost every pic. you find them in, while others without i.d you'd never guess. Here's a quick sample currently up on ebay (and no, I'm not selling any or have any interest personally or financially in them ).

Anyone have other players that struck you similarly?

Daniel

Ps. No responses, so thought I'd throw in an OT youtube link (can't hurt if no-one's reading it ). One of the best pieces of short film animation I've ever seen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4cP2oy4ebE

There are several cards that have very little resemblance to photos of him or cards like the T205 that capture his image pretty well. For example the 15 Cracker Jack and the T206 Portrait.

Is yours the same Exhibit that was on Barry Sloate's recent auction?

point!
I have often thought the same thing of Mr. Speaker!

Which one is correct?
Was his identity often mistaken by photographers?
Was he extremely plain looking?
Perhaps somewhat androgenous?
or maybe he was an alien?

very odd indeed, and no one else comes to mind on this particular subject...

I have thought that as well, because Speaker's portrait cards are somewhat rare in comparison.

Another guy I can recall whose visage is mysteriously different is John McGraw. I don't have my scans handy, but I think his portrait, and his "glove at hip" pose look like different people. Perhaps someone could scan a few of the General.

At least you don't get such ambiguity with Don Mossi
