October Pick ups...
I'll use the same line I did a few months ago: "It's not Baseball, but it's the next best thing"
I always said that if I didn't collect Baseball Memorabilia, that it would be the Beatles. So, I started selling off the pieces that I could live without and rolled the proceeds into Beatlemania. My newest pick ups... BeatlesToppsBox.jpgBeatlesWaxPack.jpg Last edited by thekingofclout; 10-02-2010 at 01:54 AM. |

Jimmy,
When I was a kid in the mid-60s I kept my marbles in an empty wax box just like that.

Cobb Fob
I beat the rain this morning to a local flea market and picked up this watch fob of Ty Cobb.
Then I did a little search on the internet for any information about it. Found two on Ebay and a little information about the Geen Duck Company that made it, but thats about it. If anyone has any additional information about the fob it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jantz Last edited by Jantz; 02-11-2012 at 04:28 PM. |

Jantz...I know there are reproductions of this piece, but do not know how to distinguish them from the originals. Both have the advertising back. Do others know? To my eye, your piece looks legit.

Nice Books Kevin!
I was the underbidder on a few scrapbooks over the years and have always been intrigued by them. Very personal look into collectors love affair with our National game. Good stuff!
Picked up another Fab Four piece. This unique TYPE 1 Press Photo that I would date to 1963. BTW... I hope to add a Baseball piece very soon TheBeatles-1.jpgTheBeatles-Verso.jpg |

I couldn't help myself, so I had to pick up one of the Halladay tickets from yesterday's playoff no-hitter. Thought it would look nice matted with a signed sports illustrated.

Picked up a few more "Pride of the Yankees" pieces...
One, is a dated July 11, 1942 handwritten letter from Christy Walsh (Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig's agent) to Mr & Mrs Elmer Lee who he considered his true personal friends in regard to two (2) tickets to the press preview to the classic movie, "Pride Of The Yankees"
This was the preview that only the press and the actors would see as it was held on July 14, 1942 and the World Premiere was held on July 15, 1942 which was the opening day for the public to see the movie for the first time ... In addition to the letter is a dated Thursday evening July 14th, 1942 Preview Showing Original program for the press and actors only. And the last piece is this Movie Still (TYPE 1) that was the image used for the program (the photo is pristine, as the spots appear courtesy of a inept 52 year old kid). 1922 Yankee Stadium Construction Work Order
I found this neat work order from the construction of the original Yankee Stadium that opened in 1923. It's from the Osborn Engineering Company (the architechs) to the White Construction Company(the builders of the stadium). It involves the mezzanine of the Stadium.

c1920ish hammer thrower lamp
12 inch tall Picked up this table lamp a week ago at the Sacramento Antiques Fair...The figure is a hammer thrower about 12" tall....Interesting lamp....the figure appears to be stock, i.e., not an add on deal...the way the lamp post is attached looks pretty well done and as old as the figure...and everything matches...patina and all...found by flashlight...gave a whopping....drum roll please....$20.00...and it works, just needs a lamp shade...the top part where the switch is is shiney, but with a shade it won't show...Photos are kind of lame, took on the fly...looks better in person

I bought this great store model glove of 'Ol Cy from fellow board member Kevin Mize over the weekend. It looks great for being over 75 years old and will be a nice addition to my no-hit pitcher collection. Thanks Kevin!

Jimmy, great pickup. What's the history on that one...was it given out at the time of the movie, or just for members working on the movie? I just got done watching that movie for, well, probably seen it 100 times. Also watched 61* right after...another great baseball movie.

Neat piece Jimmy...
I used to sell Post Cereals, and we always ran a distant #2 in the category(way behind Kellogg's). Post Toasties could not compete with the identical Kellogg's Corn Flakes. Neither could any of the other offerings, although Grape Nuts was our strongest with adults, and Sugar Crisp with kids. They changed the name to the "politically correct" Golden Crisp, and sales then went down the toilet... Huskies Cereal was long-gone by the time I was selling the brand. What was it exactly? I am thinking a similar Cereal to Wheaties, but really have no idea. Last edited by perezfan; 10-20-2010 at 10:16 AM. |

You're spot-on Mark. A weak tasting version of Wheaties, with a shelf life of two years (1937-1938). But they were around just long enough to produce some neat pieces such as these... gehrighuskies.jpg1930sGehrigHUSKIESsign1.jpg huskiesbox1.jpg huskiesring2.jpg Last edited by thekingofclout; 10-21-2010 at 07:48 AM. |

Wow... only two years of production. Huskies must have tasted like cardboard. At least it did produce some incredible and rare memorabilia, if nothing else! Thanks so much for the "show and tell".... Last edited by perezfan; 10-21-2010 at 08:59 AM. |

Huskies cereal
Quote:
I posted this on the pickup thread a few months ago, but it definately applies. Based on the verbage and the info that Jimmy provided it must be from late 1938. I had assumed it was from 1939 or so. Not a bad pickup for about $15. Last edited by Scott Garner; 10-21-2010 at 09:48 AM. |

Very cool Scott...
Vander Meer tossed his consecutive no-hitters in '38, so it makes perfect sense that Huskies would use him to promote their product during this time-frame. It all fits! That cereal must have been real garbage to vanish after just 2 years... especially considering that Post apparently promoted it well. |

In order for me to get my first "real" baseball mitt I had to eat 20 boxes of Zoom cereal in the 1960's. Talk about being horrible tasting... Anyway, I did get my Wally Moon model glove and I will attach a picture of it one of these days when I can find it. It's been MIA for about 11 years now... Gehrig was on Wheaties boxes in 1934, 1935 and 1936, so I'm sure getting him to jump to Huskies was quite a coup for Post. |
