Posted By: Alan

Can someone post images and/or describe any/all variations of these Rube Levy cards:

Rube Levy 1887 Old Judge N167 # 297
Rube Levy 1888 Old Judge N321 SF Hess # 8
Rube Levy 1888 Old Judge N321 SF Hess # 17

Thanks.
Alan

There are technically three "types" of N-321 SF Hess color cards depicting California League players. Type 1 is the standard insert card with advertising printed in the bottom border; Type 2 is believed to be cut down from an advertisement sheet, similar stock of paper and size / scale of Type 1, but not having the advertisement in the bottom border; and Type 3 which is on a very thin stock of paper, but in a scan will look like a Type 1. All of the Type 2 & 3 cards that I've seen / owned are handcut. I can verify that Type 1 & 2 examples exist of Levy. There are appx 30 different Type 3's known, but I cannot verify that Levy exists in that format

I knew of the first 2 types but not the 3rd thin stock one. I think Tik had quite a few of the ad cut ones at one time. Thanks for sharing...best regards

Leon,
The large group that Terry had a few years back were Type 3's. Under normal circumstances when some unusual variances / inconsistancies turn up, I automatically assume they are repros or fakes until proven otherwise. Terry's source however (someone you & I both know) found them around 30 years ago mixed in with a large paper ephemera collection native to Northern California. While they are likely prototypes of some kind, there is a reasonable assurance that they are both authentic & period.
