I always suspected that the 1958 Topps Enos Slaughter and Moe Drabowsky cards were side by side on the original uncut sheet because both can be found with a print defect of partially missing black ink on the backs, and it was confirmed by the recently auctioned 1958 second series uncut sheet. There are more than likely #183 Dave Jolly cards out there also affected by the print flaw.

The 1958 Topps Mickey Mantle and Jackie Jensen can be found with a printing flaw of partially missing black ink on the back of their cards, with the recently auctioned 1958 Topps second series uncut sheet it is confirmed that they were side by side on the sheet.

Cliff-- appreciate your detective work on those related 58 back defects, and help running them all down. Recurring but pretty scarce.

Jon-- great oddity of an iconic card

An old friend of the variation thread was very gracious to send me a scan of his 58 Topps Dave Jolly print error card that fits in next to the 58 Enos Slaughter print error, now it looks like the card below Jolly, #189 George Susce, is probably affected with the missing black ink print flaw.

This one is not pre-1980, but I just discovered this in my McGwire box over the weekend. I know for a fact that it is reoccurring because I have 2 of these that are identical. I was just wondering if anybody knew how scarce it is, if at all. I do know that I searched Ebay and COMC and could not find another. Here it is.

Not a print variation/error. But some kind of inventory label that got on the sheet before cutting, collating and packaging.

I found a few variants from my Topps collection...

A cool 58 Nellie Fox missing the yellow ink...

A 74 Stargell also missing yellow ink...

And a 94 Stadium Club Ryan no foil...

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the Fox and Stargel are NOT missing yellow error cards, they are altered. Both of those cards are faded from setting in the sun.

Not quite a printing variation, more of a cutting variation. I don't know enough about how Topps cut their sheets back in the day, so I'm wondering how something like this could happen - anyone know how the sheets were cut up? Were sheets fed into a machine, were blades run through stationary sheets?

I bought this from eBay a few years back - no way it was issued in a pack, so I'm guessing someone took it out of the factory when it was printed in '78.

I have plenty of cards like this from 70s and 80s rack packs. That's how bad Topps' quality control was back then.

Really? This isn't just a case where the image is tilted; the piece of cardboard itself is diamond shaped, with no 90 degree angles. These things were in packs? They must have stood out like sore thumbs and most must have come out of the package damaged.

I have never been able to figure out why they placed cards on the sheet in a random order. Wouldn't it make sense to place the cards on the sheet in number order? Was there a method to it?

The reason they did that was to have random numbered cards in wax, rack, and cello packs rather than a bunch of consecutive numbered cards in those packs.

So this post motivated me of taking a picture of a similar card. It is from 2007, when Topps was making a bunch of Mickey Mantle cards. This one I pulled from a pack myself. The two interesting things about this card:
1. There is masking tape on the front of it.
2. The card is torn about a third of the way through where the tape is.

Here are the pictures:

I went and took pictures of just my Yankees errors. Not a lot of cards, only six cards in total. Only one is pre-1980, it is this 1976 Jim Hunter:

I collect error cards of all sorts, including severly damaged, modified and defaced cards. BUT most of them are post 1980, so should I end up posting them into here, make a thread similar to this in the Modern Baseball cards section, or just make a thread for my own pictures? There is a lot of post 2000 content in this collect, including a lot of hockey cards.

We have had several post 80 variants in this thread but given the length of this thread it might be good to have a post 80 sister thread. Others may think otherwise.

That tape job is interesting. Maybe since the tape was added before insertion in the pack it qualifies as an intentional change to the card and thus a true variation

1968 Topps - [Base] #369 - The Sporting News All Star Selection (Carl Yastrzemski)
Courtesy of COMC.com

Two recurring print defects on this one:
1) Black blemish in left banner
2) Red circle fisheye near B on cap

So three variations: regular, one with just black mark, and one with black mark and fisheye.

Default Is 1967 Topps yellow back a thing?

Hi there,

I've been lurking a while and saw something that might be of discussion here. Saw this 1967 Topps Wilhelm card and the back was discolored. Does anyone know if this is fading or weird ink circumstances? I've seen others like this from different series (no apparent pattern), and one card who's back was brownish. I don't know what to make of it.

Looks like the printing process was running low on green ink to me on the 1967 Wilhelm card.

Not baseball, but an unusual 1970-71 Topps B-ball card with partially printed frame line.

So basically a sister variation to the Jackie Robinson with diamond logo cut off.

There is also a variation of this with white circle to the left of the Phillies ballcap in the diamond logo. I stopped counting when I saw 5 on COMC.

John---here is SCD article on the Robinson and Herm. Note the Herm has a back variation that tracks the truncated front logo. Had not noticed the white mark
