Default ? Printing Error

I got this card in the other day and inspecting it I found a printing mark on the back in the top left corner. It is printed on the card in the same ink as the back is. I am assuming it is just a common printing error but thought I would check here and see if anyone has ever seen one like this. I haven't.

Bruce

These lines have appeared before on other T206s. They are not that common, but do show up now & then.

I'm not sure what the proper term is for these lines, but I refer to them as "sheet crop lines".

I have 6 T206s in my collection that have these lines on the back. Some are multiples of the same player, thus ruling out a coincedence.

If you could please, I sure would like to see a scan of the front of the card along with the factory number on the back.

Hope this helps

Nice printers mark, I have seen a few smaller ones. A board member recently sold on the bay.

Bruce

Thanks for posting the information and a front scan. Thats the first Arndt that I've seen with a crop line on the back.

Nice card, by the way!

Interesting. I also have an Arndt that is extra tall like that - wonder if it was the top card on the sheet?

Default Printers Mark

I was going though a stack of cards I got a few months ago last night and came across this card. It's a Sullivan Portrait with printer's cross mark, hard to see in scan but vertical mark is still there right on edge of card.

I have thought about these marks all day at work and have come to the conclusion that they where put on the cards for cutting alignment. You would only need the one on top of the stack to have them. You could actually print several of them out then remove the mark off the plate and print the sheets out.
I may be way out in left field though on this thinking. I know many of you have a lot more knowledge of the T206's than I do.

Default T206 Crops

Tex,

i totally agree......used for alignment/sheet cutting.....usually seen on miscut cards where the mark wasn't supposed to be seen...

BTW...

nice card....probably the best crop mark i have seen so far and i have been searching them for years....

they go typically $50-$150.....

That's just way too much work. The marks were most likely just at certain places on the sheet, but on every sheet. That way the cutter could simply take a random size stack of sheets and cut them. The extra time to place a special sheet atop a stack would slow things down too much.

The question is exactly where they were on the sheets. Almost certainly at each corner. It's possible there were marks other places too, commonly in the middle of a side, less commonly in the middle of the sheet.

Tex,

Steve is right about the plate....too much work......i think they were on all 4 corners of every sheet.....

Maybe so. I was thinking that they would use them to set the jig that holds the cards in the right place. Then they could cut a bunch until they saw the jig was moving and reset it. Another question. Were the printing plates made of limestone?

Johnny - What's the anomaly on the Pickering in your post? It looks fat on the top and thin on the bottom like mine.

Ralph - Thank you for posting a scan of your Sullivan. I have a Sullivan with a crop line too, except mine has a Piedmont 150 back.

Johnny - One of these days, I got to see your collection! PM coming soon.

Tim - I might be wrong, but I think the anomaly with Johnny's Pickering is that it has a different name at the top.

Jantz - If Johnny's was cut the same as mine but with a different name that would be great information.

Bruce - If you ever find anymore T206s with a crop line, it would probably be a wise decision to acquire them if possible. There always seems to be someone looking to add them to their collection.

Tim - It would be nice to see some threads started about these anomalies (crop lines, sheet numbers, two-different names, etc.) so that board members could share & consolidate this information. Threads kinda like Ted Z's front/back threads.

Johnny - You don't owe me anything for the Griffith. I knew as soon as I saw that card that it belonged in your collection. Those Krugers are incredible! What are the odds that one person would own matching scraps of the same player 100 years later?

Erick - If your Chase-Zimmerman & Bradley-Bender need a friend, they can always come over to my house and hang out with my Spade-Cicotte & Lindaman-Bresnahan.

Here is another odd one. The three is printed and is under the one. I know it is hard to tell that from the picture. Have any of you seen much of this.

Bruce - I've seen quite a few T206's with what people call "under prints" but most in my opinion are not. I believe what gives them this appearance is the unprinted paper readily absorbs the pen, stamp, etc, while the printed area does not. So it looks like it was printed over but more than likely as in the case of your card was written on.

Scottish%20Rifles%20Piper%20England%20OMb.jpg

this bank stamp was added to this card after its printing at some point but it appears it is under the ad. This is common when a stamp is added later to the card. Maybe a printing expert can expalin the reason but in most cases the stamp or writing appears it is under but it was applied after the original printing

I pulled out my 75x scope to look at it. All my other cards with stamps and writing on them I can see a color change over the original print of the card. Not on this one though. It could be on top but if it is all the brown has come off.
