Default So should W514s actually be 1920-22?

Good day folks,

Perhaps this has already been covered somewhere, but I didn't see it while searching. I do not own the current SCD book, but I *believe* they changed the year of issue of W514s this year to say 1920-21. That particular fact may be wrong, but OldCardboard.com has it as a 1920-21 issue right now.

Anyway, assuming the change to 1920 is correct, I'm wonder if the 1921 should actually also bump up a year to 1922, based on the fact that Gibson resigned from the Pirates on June 30, 1922. There are a handful of newspaper articles that announce this in their July 1, 1922 issues, but are pay-per-view or by subscription only.

One such example:

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/boston/a...S&pqatl=google

The caption on Gibson's card [image courtesy of OldCardboard.com] says he's the 'former manager':

As I understand, Gibson managed the Toronto Maple Leafs of the IL for the 1919 season. I believe that announcement was made in January of 1919, and then in December of 1919, the announcement of him joining the Pirates was made. To the best of my knowledge, there was no agreement in place for him to manage Pittsburgh *before* the January, 1919 announcement, and I don't believe he took a managing hiatus between 1920 and 1922 until his departure [based on his managing record on baseball-reference.com].

If anyone has any information to the contrary, or perhaps that further supports my thinking, I'd love to hear it.

Regards,

Richard.

I love this set b/c of the inclusion of 7 out of 8 (minus utility man Fred McMullin) of the Chicago "Black" Sox and since they played through the 1920 season before they were banned, I guess a 1920 designation is more accurate.

Why was the dating changed to exclude 1919? Gandil is in the set, but didn't play in 1920.

It could've been printed under the assumption that he would play in 1920...If I remember correctly, he sat out that year because of a contract dispute, or something along those lines.. I haven't been paying much attention to the current status of this set, but unless there's definitive evidence to support 1919's exclusion, I'm all for 1919 staying.

The player I often use to reference this set is Pickles Dilhoefer (1893-1922). Dilhoefer's died of typhoid Feb 23, 1922. His card in the set has him playing for the Philadelphia Quakers, he played 8 games for them in 1918, and finished his career with the St. Louis Cardinals 1919-21.

But the variations in the set also add questions Bob Roth, Maranville, Bancroft, and Jennings. Personally, the exclusion of McHenry suggests all dates prior to 1922-23. Great mystery. My guess is 1920-21.

Many of the accused Black Sox played well into the 1920 season before their alleged involvement in the 1919 World Series scandal became exposed
