Default Tip O'Neill Old Judge

Posted By: identify7

There are quite a few Tip O’Neill Old Judge variations listed in some resources. The ’93 SCD Price Guide for baseball cards 1887-1947 tabulates twelve different Tip O’Neill cards.

So far, the best I have been able to determine is that these twelve cards portray three different players, of which one half represent the Tip O’Neill who won the Triple Crown in 1887, and
half show others. This multiple player portrayal is apparently attributable to two separate O’Neills having the nickname “Tip” at that time (James E. + Norris O’Neil), and an error which
resulted in the photo of Bill White being substituted for Tip O’Neill. I have no idea which of these variations are common and which are infrequently encountered, but judging only from the
above, if you want the Triple Crown winner, buying an Old Judge card of O’Neill will result in achieving your objective half of the time.

Although you can maximize your chances of getting the desired card by following the one line description offered by this reference, to be 100% certain you will have to eliminate several poses
which bear John E. descriptions similar to those of Bill White. Does anyone have scans, a reference or other descriptive material to offer which will help clarify the identification of which cards show
James E. O’Neill?

Default Tip O'Neill Old Judge

Posted By: Jay Miller

Gil-There are only two Tip O'Neil's(O'Neill) in the Old Judge set. Although for a while it was thought that the clean shaven O'Neil on St Louis was James Edward "Tip" O'Neill and the moustached player denoted as O'Neil on St Louis was really Bill White, when we updated the British Cartophilic Society Listing last year we discovered that both the moustached player and the non-moustached player on St Louis were in fact both James Edward "Tip" O'Neill. The other Tip O'Neill in the set is Noris "Tip" O'Neill who played S.S. for Oakland in the California League. There are currently 11 known poses of James Edward "Tip" O'Neill and one of Norris "Tip" O'Neill making a pair of six packs of Tips.
