Default Hey....Abbott?

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy

I recently picked up Carlos Bauer's book, "The Early Coast League Statistical Record, 1903-1957." It's a must have reference for early PCL player identification.

In the book, the catcher who played for Los Angeles in 1911 is identified as Pete Abbott. I noticed a lot of checklists have the player as Fred Abbott, a player that played in the Majors. Ironically he's listed as Harry Frederick Abbott, but was born as Harry Frederick Winbigler. Fred Abbott was primarily a catcher from 1903-1905. He caught for both the Cleveland Indians and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Is this a case of an incorrect checklist listing or did the player use a nickname?

Here's the card in question, and here's Fred Abbott's T206 with Toledo:

Fred Abbott also died in Los Angeles.

Thanks,

Patrick

Hey Robert,

Thanks for the response. I agree the cards show the same individual. However, is it Pete Abbott or Fred Abbott?

It could be the same guy. They both look alike & played the same position. Probably just incorrect info or a clerical error on the production part.

It is the same guy - Fred Abbott...the PCL book either has his first name wrong or he went by the nickname 'Pete'. He played for Toledo from 1906-1910 and he played one year in the PCL with LA in 1911.

Thanks for the responses!

Rhett,

I sent you an email a few days back regarding a possible trade involving a Street E254 that you have on your wantlist.

Not sure if you received the email since I never received a response or whether a spam filter grabbed it.

Let me know if you received the email.

Thanks,

Patrick

can't help you on your questions, but wanted to chime in regarding the book. I just picked up a copy a couple weeks ago, and while I haven't had a chance to really study it much yet, I agree. I am thrilled with the amount of info. I should be able to extract the vast majority of my cousins' playing stats from this ...info I had never before been able to find!

great stuff.
