Default 1928 George Ruth Candy Cards (Set of 6)

Posted By: P.G.

Could someone fill me in on the value of this set. I met a store owner today that had all 6 of these cards. The condition was not great (some mild staining)but did not see any creases upon a cursory glance. He said he wanted $1,000 for the set. As I looked at the PSA pop report, it stated that they no longer grade these cards. What is the reasoning for this?

Would appreciate any information some of the knowledgable people here could provide, especially as to the cards scarcity.

Thanks

I assume that like the Fro-Joy cards, the Ruth Candy cards were frequently (and skillfully?) counterfeited. Hadn't heard about PSA not grading them anymore, but that doesn't surprise me given that. No offense to the shop owner, but I'd stay away from this one unless there's impeccable provenance.

The Babe Ruth Candy cards are the second most faked cards in the pre-war market. I would guesstimate that 90% or more are fakes. Many (newer card) shop owners would also be duped on these. Experience in the age of the cardboard is the best bet. I have several real ones and have handled many fakes too. Also, there were 2-3 different kinds of cardboard used for these originally. This is not a set to buy if you are inexperienced, imo....

Thanks for the input. From the talks I have had with this owner, he does seem I bit green. I myself would have no idea what I am doing with these, so I am staying away. Appreciate your time.
