Default P2 Pins Questions

I picked up a few of these recently and one has a totally blank back. The paper is there but no writing. It is highly doubtful that this has been altered. I sent it to PSA for grading and they refused it because of the blank back.

Has anyone seen this before.

I also picked up a Matty pin with a small spot of rust on the back trim. Thoughts on removal of this?

Lastly, are the small and large letter variations really a big deal. Does anyone care and is one really that much rarer then the other.

Thanks

James G

About the blank back...it is probably actually just a completely off-center back where the part used was in between the real backs on the sheet--these pins are often found w/ very poor centering of the back paper.

The large letter versions aren't the biggest deal in the world but they do tend to be tougher than the smaller version of the same player.

Don't try to remove the rust.

Hi James,

People do care about the large/small letters. The prices paid do reflect a difference. It isn't just the size of the letters - the style of the images are quite different between the small and large letters. The images on the large are darker and more realistic. As a generalization, the large are scarcer and more valuable, but that varies from subject to subject.

Here are my Speaker P2s: large is ungraded, small is graded - you can see they are quite different:

DEFINITELY when it comes to price, there is a difference on LL vs SL. Some of the photos are COMPLETELY different too.

heres an example of one being off center (and miscut).

As noted above, the pictures may differ as well depending upon whether the letters are small or large. For example, Cobb's pins have pictures of him with the D on hat (small letter pin) and without the D (large letters).

And the pins can really be expensive too (at least in the minds of the sellers who don't inhabit planet Earth):

That blank piece of paper was the sheet of inserts that should have had printing on it but stuck to the sheet in front. I have had examples of two layers of the same insert and ones where you can see the blank ones behind. These weren't fabricated or homemade, just the process back in the 1910's that don't have the same QA standards we see today.
