Candy Cummings is pictured. Moreover, and I'm not sure if this would affect the price at all, this CDV shows a studio background. It appears that this is rarer and most CDVs of this particular team image lack the studio background.

Zach is correct. That is a first generation of the 1875 Hartford BBC CDV w/Candy Cummings. There is that type and the black background type, which I used to own one of, again, as Zach mentioned. Mine was also bought on ebay and later sold in auction. I got it graded and it was graded an SGC80, I believe.

Nice card but the photo on this one was sort of messed up a little. That being the case I was a little surprised it went for that much. I think my real nice one brought around 10k when I sold it, three to four years ago.

Sounds like multiple guys are out there trying to rip sellers off with lowball offers before it ends. I'll bet they go to hundreds of listings and offer little or nothing for great stuff, without an ounce of a conscience.
I had a guy like that once buy something from me after getting me to cave to an unbelievable low price. Then I saw it in an auction. I felt so cheated!! Never again!

Don't get me wrong - that guy was certainly being helpful to the seller and was acting very kindly. My comment was simply that as entertainment, his message was "THE END" in my eyes.

Agree with Barry, I believe that $8-$10K is a realistic auction price for that one. Wish I had seen it, never would have sold for that low......

I disagree the value was that much considering the shape the photo was in. But photos certainly aren't my main area of expertise so maybe I am wrong. Personally I wouldn't have paid more than the $1500 for it, that it sat at for the last several days. I think a nice one would be in the 8-12k range.....at least that is what the one I had sold for, in a very well publicized auction. regards

I do not believe it is an 8-10K piece either. A much nicer example sold in April for 12K. The toning on the top half of the photo on eBay brings it down in my opinion.

I don't know if it was reglued but the top of the picture is all faded looking. Really, how does anyone think that is a good looking photo, I don't know. Even if I owned it I would say it's quite faded. You are much more of a photo guy than me (as we both know from my last few endeavors) but I have to believe photos that are that light don't have high value, relative to others of their kind. One of my normal searches brought that card up about 4-5 days ago, and I was watching it. I was out after the $1520 range......I think once a real good image of it were had it would detract from the value even more....but again, maybe I don't know...

In my opinion, the condition of items that are as scarce as this one makes less of an impact because someone looking to own a presentable example would be happy just to see any come up for sale/auction and probably would not hold out on spending serious money while waiting for a better condition copy. On the other hand, a T206 Cobb card or something like that, condition makes all of the difference in the world regarding its price point.

I tend to agree about super rare items. This item doesn't fall into that category, imo. I have seen at least 5-10 for sale in the last 14 yrs.....No, it's not common, but in the next few years you will see another. I can't say that for many of the items we collect. best regards

I think you are right, more examples of this card will almost certainly come up for sale in the coming years (although many collectors like myself don't always have the patience to wait years). Part of the scarcity component of this "card" is that collectors looking for a Candy Cummings career contemporary "card" really have this one option only, to me this overrides the factor of how many of these examples may exist, around 10 or so would be my best guess as well.

Leon--The photo has some issue (maybe a development issue) in the upper left but it looks better in person and the Cummings image is very clear. The reason the UL issue stands out is because the rest of the photo is amazingly sharp. There is no repair or any other issue that I could tell.
BTW, I'll buy all the copies that you can find that look like this at the lot's final price.

Leon- I believe the Hartford CdV you owned in SGC 80 sold at auction for about 20K in 2007. I think 10-15K for one of these is about right. I also believe that most of the ones that have been auctioned or sold in the past 10years are the same CdVs being recycled, with only about a half dozen known.

Leon- my first reaction when I saw the light area was that it was glare from shooting the image. Since it is in fact on the photo it would have some impact, but I still think the winner got it at a fair price.

I guess 'OldJudge' was the buyer. Seems like a good deal to me. It could sell for $7-$10,000. My only concern is that it seems that more of these 19th C. team cards are turning up. There are certainly more than 3 or 4 known and the big auction houses aren't going to be able to hype them as much.

You are right Gary...I don't remember it going for that much but maybe I had sold it first and then it got consigned. I don't remember getting that much for it myself.

They'll hype them the same, it just won't be as accurate as it once was thought to be.
