the funny thing is that guys like wayne varner who bought alot of stuff raw in the 70's and early 80's. he has since had alot graded, received his psa and gai 9's, and still puts ridiculous prices on things. he has nothing into these raw cards that he bought 25+ years ago, but still won't give you a decent price. he doesn't need the money so he could care less if the card sits in his inventory for years. he will either get his price or he will have the card buried with him.

BIN with a Make Offer is far more fun for consumers! That way, the buyer feels like there's a process to arrive at a price...a little more satisfying

they're not flexible because they don't need the money!! they will get the price they want or they will dust the card off until they die. that is why alot of these dealers are ignorant at shows unless you want to drop 10 grand on their table. it is their way of telling you they don't need your business and don't waste their time for a 50 dollar item.

here is a prime example, this is an easy card, it lists for 200 in smr, yet wheat's opening bid is 300, i guarantee this won't sell!!

About 6 months ago, I offered the 707 card guy $1,100. for his 1949 Satchel Paige PSA 6. He wouldn't budge from his BIN of $1,250.

Couple months ago I picked up my '49 Paige PSA 6 off regular ebay for $950.ish - very pleased, awesome centering, tough.

Folks like this give BIN a bad rap. I have suspect that when this card hits value of $1,250. - 707 card guy will then be asking $1,500.

I planned to auction off four Sam Crawford cards last night. As soon as I saw that ebay was planning the one cent day for today, I postponed my auctions until next week. I didn't want them to get lost in the sea of overpriced cards that won't sell.

Smart, Brian. Same here. One interesting thing is that all these overpriced cards on ebay today don't have too high BINs, hardly any BINs at all. They are all using too high starting bids. The prices on most all of these cards are ridiculous.

i hate when the dealers load all their crap every 3 months or so when this special happens. how in the world does the 707 guy sell enough cards to stay in business? he obviously does, but his prices are rediculous for over graded material. he made a killing when another board member was building a psa 8 set of 33 goudeys last year, but that doesnt happen every month. i have to take my hat off to Joe's Vintage Sportscards...a year ago his prices were way to high and inflexible, since then they have re-evaluated and now have very fair prices and i have been able to secure some terrific 33 goudeys for my set. Now Joe's is moving alot of inventory. I cant imagine ever doing a deal with 707.

The thing about 707 is that they must be spending a lot on advertising, that's probably how they generate sales. I see their ads in almost all the hobby periodicals that I look at.

It doesn't matter when an auction starts, it's when it ends that's important. A 3, 5 or 10 day auction would do the trick of not getting buried in with the overpriced delers.

I don't really even look at ebay from the time dump day starts until those listings have ended. It's not worth it to wade through it all. Unfortunately, I really don't look at items that start after the dump items are listed either - I just sit it out for a week.

I've had the misfortune several times in the past of starting auctions a few days before a dump day (I don't sell all that much on ebay, so who knows how I have such bad timing). But now if I have an auction with no bids and dump day starts, I end the auction. Kind of too bad - I know the cheap listings are good for the big dealers, but the regular ebay sellers are damaged by having a dump day start in the middle of an open auction - selling prices are lower from my experience.

When I first saw this post, and read a few, I thought it was just another round of B___ing and whining. But then, a bit later, I searched around a bit on eBay, and it is a mess. All kinds of overpriced stuff is out there. It is like looking through 1989 Topps for hours only to find one single 1957 Topps in the mess. It's worse than that!!!

So how long do we wait for it to clear??? 7 days?

First and seventh days are the worse. Sort by "newly listed" on the first day and it's a zoo. Sort by "ending today" on the last day you can forget it. In between you're OK with the "newly listed" sort. All this BS is stuck in the middle.

On ebay if you click on the little yellow tab that says "Auctions" you will weed out all of the BIN's....then do a search on "ending soonest" and it will weed the rest of the dump day stuff out...until the last day. At that point go read a book.

Also, I see a lot of ranting about what someone might charge. Let me be the devils advocate here. Dealers, or anyone, can ask whatever they want to, of course. Levi Bleam (707) has been in business for a long time. He's not a bad guy imo. Are some, or most, of his prices too high? Probably. That doesn't mean you have to buy them. I have bought from him many times and not once did I pay sticker price. There were probably a few times he wouldn't budge and so be it. I know he can be brash sometimes but he has always been helpful and nice to me.....take care

these "dumpers" insult the intelligence of the average vintage card collector with their high priced auctions. Much of Mike Wheats cards have been for sale for years, and will probably continue that way after thiese auctions are over. If they sell 5% of what they have listed I bet they'll be happy

As someone who often lists on dump day, all the overpriced listings just kill me.
I often list specialty items or rarities (sp's, etc) on these days because of the fear I have of straight auctioning specialty items. The prices I list them for are not cheap exactly, but are basically at recent market value as far as I can tell.
HOWEVER, I'm not sure anyone even gets to see them at all b/c of all the unbelievably high priced cards on dump day. It really hurts those of us not trying to make the big score. I just listed some cards last night (nice and vague...no ads) for 1/2 the price of what 707 is listing them for, but who's gonna see 'em amongst all those high prices?? Thanks 707 (insert sarcastic face here).
