Jim,

As a general rule, and not singling out any auctionhouse in particular, do you think the following practices are positive or negative for the hobby?

--cleaning card--such as taking glue off
--taking out creases
--erasing pencil marks
--pressing cards
--trimming
--bleaching/recoloring
--using restoration services on cards such as Paul Messier or Graphic Restoration

Since you were the one who posed these questions, I am just interested in whether you have an opinion on which practices you find acceptable. Or perhaps you do not care and the whole discussion is just an informational or academic exercise.

Thanks,
Wesley

Wesley,

I care deeply for two reasons:

1)Its the right thing
2)I have a significant investment in graded cards

I think all of the things you listed are bad for the hobby.

i really don't want this to be about what I think--I am waiting and waiting and waiting to hear what are 5 chosen dealers say.

Sportscards Plus-Sothebys has an auction closing in a couple of days. Perhaps they have their hands full this week.

BTW, has any auction house ever demanded that we post their list of reneggers? Would/should we allow it?

Bruce,

Sure. Why not? The holiday season is the perfect time for dealers and collectors alike to air all of their grievances about the hobby.

I am calling the 5 dealers who I asked for their comments. One who I know extremely well and I trust completely not to alter a card is a bit uncertain whether to respond. I urged him to but do not know if he will or not.

Two-three e-mails into the others.

Jim
